With so many kids heading back to school {my nephews start tomorrow!}, there is a lot of emphasis on styles and supplies. But why not smiles? The toothbrush you use has a starring role in not only your dental health, but also in the confidence behind your smile.

back to school

Sonicare issued a challenge recently. They sent us two of the Power Up toothbrushes to use for a week to see if we would be willing to part with our old toothbrushes after using them. I like a good challenge! Plus, I have used a Sonicare toothbrush before, so I was curious to see if the new Power Up toothbrush was similar to what I remember.

Power Up; batteries included.

Powered by two AA batteries, the Sonicare Power Up toothbrush does more brush strokes in one day than a manual provides in a month. That amazed me. It’s no doubt the Power Up toothbrush does the heavy lifting for you {which is brilliant especially if you have kids that may get lax with their brushing}. The Power Up automatically turns off after two minutes of brushing {another helpful feature for kids}.

Luv at her dental check up a few weeks ago. All aces!

I nestled the AA batteries in the base of the Power Up toothbrush and turned it on. I had forgotten how using a Sonicare toothbrush felt! Okay, and I admit, totally forgot how to brush with a Sonicare and splattered all over my mirror. *snort* For a first time user, using the Power Up may be a little startling.

The Mister and I chuckled as we climbed into bed the first night of our Power Up challenge. We both shared our thoughts and agreed that while we brushed, we were wondering when the time was up… The Mister likened it to “being like the most comfortable and intense two minute earthquake with the epicenter being your mouth.” I think that is the best way to describe the experience, with major emphasis on “comfortable”. Our teeth felt amazingly clean, and now {after using the Power Up toothbrush for ten days} I find myself actually looking forward to brushing my teeth. Whereas before it was more obligatory, just something I have to do… I am extremely curious as to what my dentist will say when I see him later this month!

Noteworthy mentions:

* Better plaque removal as compared to a manual toothbrush – up to 75% more overall, and up to 2x more in hard-to-reach places
* Safe and gentle on gums and teeth
* Powerful but gentle cleaning action drives fluid deep between teeth
* Noticeable results and a better check-up in 28 days or your money back

Remember to replace your toothbrush… head.

The ADA recommends that we replace toothbrushes every three months. Changing the brush on the Power Up is a breeze. The brush head snaps on and off, making for simple cleaning and changing. Also, it is equipped with “reminder” bristles so you can see when it is time to retire that brush head.

  1. 19.99 is really affordable for one of these powered brushes. we have different ones by a different brand that were around $12 but i’m pretty unsatisfied with their performance. we’ll have to try these soon 🙂

  2. I haven’t ever tried a powered toothbrush before…. I wasn’t sure they were worth the cost. This one sounds like it is, though.

  3. I haven’t used a battery powered toothbrush in a while but this one sounds pretty good so I might have to give it a try. I also like that it has a shut off feature.

  6. Sonic Care is a Great electric toothbrush that really cleans teeth. I would love to own one of these toothbrushes. After reading this review, I want to get one of these toothbrushes because I know that my teeth will be clean after using!

  7. I really want to get my kids the electric because it does work a little better then the manual at taking off left over foods etc. Especially when they insist on doing it themselves. I love that is affordable for an electric toothbrush. Great review.

  8. Taking care of your teeth is one of the most important things a person should do. I have very sensitive teeth and have tried battery-operated, but wow, I cannot use them. Even with Synsodyne, it killed me. Never again lol.

  9. I LOVE how hubby described your first encounter with your shiny new toothbrushes-He’s quite the creative one! I recently was given the opportunity to try out an electronic toothbrush myself and I must say I LOVED it! I have no issue not going back to my old toothbrush 🙂

  10. Oh wow this made me want to go out and buy a battery powered toothbrush! I have never owned one but now I really want one! I bet my kids would love one as well.

  11. i havent tried a battery operated tooth brush cause they are so expensive. but this one sounds fairly reasonable and your review is a positive one so i may try it

  12. I have the tooth brush and it is okay. The first one I had was defective, the second actually works. It does clean the teeth well.

  13. I didn’t even know they made a kids one. I have the adult one and I love it! I am buying my kids that next pay check. It looks great!

  14. I’ve seen these at Target before. Great to read a review on them since I think that is what I’ll get for me next.

  15. I have a rechargeable Sonicare toothbrush and I love it! I can always tell a huge difference when I use my manual toothbrush when not at home. I recommend them highly!

  16. I have been hearing good things about this toothbrush and I think when it comes time to get a new one I will be buying one.

  17. I think this is amazing … it makes it fun for children to use this and they continue and learn to brush their teeth

  18. my daughter and husband both have used battery powered toothbrushes in the past, but I never have. These look like great inexpensive toothbrushes to use and I will be getting my first one soon so I can try it out.

  19. I really need to get into the habit of using an electric toothbrush! What’s going on with the octopus in the picture??

  20. I liked your review. I’ve used an electric toothbrush for many years… but its slowly dying (very slow – as opposed to how fast it used to be). I think I will give the Sonicare a try. It’s a less expensive than the electric toothbrushes, and it sounds like its an excellent product.

  21. This is a very good toothbrush that I would love to own! I like Sonicare Products because they are so well made. It is a great price and I want to get one!

  22. I’m currently using a battery-operated toothbrush that doesn’t work any more, so it’s time for a new one. It’s amazing how affordable Sonicare is now! Thanks for the review. I’ll certainly consider this model when I’m shopping.

  23. I have always wanted to try a toothbrush like this…maybe these reviews will convince me it is time to just buy one!

  24. That’s a good idea with the timer for us….I mean, for the “older” kids! I never track how long I should be brushing, usually I’m tired, etc.

  25. I just love my Sonicare toothbrush! Though mine is the rechargeable version I have no doubt that this one is just as amazing!

  26. I like that it’s gentle on gums and teeth – my dentist recommended them to me for that reason, it’s gets off the plaque without having to scrub hard.

  27. My husband and I use the “spin brush” and we love them. We have always seen the sonicare ones (the expensive ones) and never got them because of the $$. Since this one is not as pricey as the ones we have seen before, we have to look into them and see if there is a difference between the 2. The spin brush replacement heads are around $8 for 2….how much are the sonicare’s??

  28. Better plaque removal as compared to a manual toothbrush – up to 75% more overall. That is amazing, I had no idea. We will all be getting Sonic brushes for Christmas.

  29. I’ve never used an electric toothbrush before (always been a traditional guy myself!) but your review has made me want to try one for sure! Maybe I’ll check this out.

  30. Love this – these are usually so much more expensive!! I love spin brushes even for my toddler. She already has a cavity between her front teeth, so we’re up for anything to help in oral care!

  31. My friend uses this toothbrush and she says its the best one she has ever owned- at costco, they are always having sales on the brush heads so I have been tempted to get one!

  32. I have a sonic care toothbrush and I love it. My teeth have never felt so clean before and my dentist said that my teeth were great on my last check up.

  33. Battery powered toothbrushes are much better than a normal toothbrush. They clean much better. Thank you for reviewing this!

  34. id love to try a brush like this I have only used a manual brush before but this looks like it could really get the job done 🙂

  35. We have used the more expensive versions of sonicare brushes but I would really like to try these for my younger kids.

  36. I liked your Join the Sonicare Power Up Challenge article.
I have never used a battery operated toothbrush but
the Sonicare Power Up toothbrush sounds like a great product.
The next time i go walmart i’ll have to look for one.

  37. This is great and easy for children to use … and will make it more fun while brushing their teeth compared to the manual toothbrush

  38. I have one of these and if you can afford one I would go for it! Does a better job than manual brushing thats for sure.

  39. It must be intense if you splattered your mirror! And I loved that added *snort* haha. This might be just what Hubby needs to not brush SO hard. I swear I replace his brush once a week.

  40. I LOVE my sonicare toothbrush. My husband has tried one and just can’t get used to the sensation. My dentist did comment after I started using it that she could see a difference too.

  41. I have a sonicare, they are very impressive, I feel like it even flosses a little and my teeth feel so much cleaner than with a manual toothbrush.

  42. This toothbrush sounds like it would do a much better job than manual toothbrushes. These would be perfect for both children and adults. Thanks for the important reminder to change your toothbrush heads regularly.

  43. I had no idea how much more effective a powered toothbrush is over a manual brush. Our daughter has one, but we haven’t tried one before.
