State Farm and Celebrate My Drive with Kelly Clarkson

National Teen Driver Safety Week is nearly upon us and State Farm is prepared with their program, Celebrate My Drive with singer Kelly Clarkson. Before I know it, my teen will be driving and I’m not going to lie, it scares me.  Especially when I hear statistics such as auto crashes are the number one cause of death among teens in North America.  Wow!

Celebrate My Drive was created by State Farm to share the belief that safe driving is a lifelong commitment from the start and I wholeheartedly agree!  I have to be the example I want my kids to learn from – that includes wearing my seat belt, respecting the rules of the road and putting away my cellphone.  Of course, I have to have a variety of music playing (there’s nothing wrong with that!)

  1. Be a defensive driver – more than likely it will be the thing that keeps you from getting into an accident. Awareness of the drivers around you is of the utmost importance.

  2. I tell my daughters that they must leave their cell phones in their purses and that they are not to look at them…even at a red light.
    Thanks!

  3. Do not tail gate! Leave enough room for the car in front of you or you can rear end someone if they suddenly stop!

  4. Always look left first. Oncoming traffic is closest to you on that side. Look left, right, left again.

Don’t text while driving. Also please for the love of pete do not READ newspapers or books (YES, I saw someone doing this ON THE INTERSTATE…he was holding the newspaper over the steering wheel.)

  5. Be aware of what’s going on around you. Watch what the other vehicles are doing, keep an eye on the side of the road for bicyclists, pedestrians, and animals, leave enough space between you and the vehicle ahead that you can see in front of them (if you’re so close all you can see is their taillights, you’re completely unaware of something ahead of them that might make them stop short).

  6. STOP at the stop signs. A teenager just hit me and my daughter, while completely disregarding the stop sign. Don’t assume there won’t be any traffic, even on a quiet street!
    Thanks.

  7. Be aware of other drivers & their mistakes .. just because you follow the rules doesn’t mean they do 🙁
    Thank you

  8. Leave your cell phone in your purse in the back seat floorboard to keep from being tempted to text.

  9. Safe Driving Tip: Watch the drivers around you. They might not be paying attention to what they are doing and that could put you in danger.

  10. Be aware of your surroundings and the vehicles around you. You need to know what you’re doing while driving but you also need to anticipate what other drivers may do. Thanks.

  11. There are so many electronic distractions from phones that I hope everyone knows about those and will adhere to them. Texts are not worth your life. But non-speaking GPS scare me too so I tell my son not to use it ever! But my hubby’s advice is to always leave an “out” at least a car space even at a light so you can get “out” if you have to.

  12. Keep your cell in your purse in the backseat so that when you arrive at your destination you have to go into the back seat and will not forget your child in the car.

  13. People need to understand the situations they can get into involving tractor trailers and flatbeds. Never drive between trucks, try to keep a distance from trucks, stay clear of trucks with items tied down (especially piping), and never pull out in front of a truck. I’ve seen people crushed between two trucks, crushed to death under piping that broke off of a flatbed. Always pay attention to what is coming up behind you and keep plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you whether stopped or not to give you room to react to a car or truck that may not stop in time. I was almost smashed into at a red light by a truck that wasn’t going to stop in time. The driver ended up stopped in the middle of the intersection. Thank God there were no other cars around. Not everyone is so lucky. A dump truck with bad brakes smashed into cars stuck in traffic. One woman’s car caught fire; and she was not able to get out, and no one could save her.

  14. Do NOT feel that you have to keep up with everyone or you have to be ahead of everyone. That’s a great way to get into an accident.

  15. My safe driving tip is to keep your car well maintained. Part of safe driving is making sure your vehicle is safe to drive.

  16. Texting is probably one of the greatest distractions ever I witness this daily I always try to leave my phone in my briefcase until I am not driving

  17. I always tell my sons never to talk or text on cell phones when driving and to be alert and and aware of the other drivers around them.

    callawishes(at)hotmail(dot)com

  18. Always check the road before you go, even when the light turns green make sure there is no traffic coming the other way as drivers sometimes will race to beat the light.

  19. Make sure tires are properly inflated and in good condition before driving. Allow some extra time in case you get stuck in traffic, so you won’t have to drive fast to “make up” for it.

  20. keep your eyes on the road at all times, and of course no distractions like cell phones while driving, it is much safer to get to a spot where you can pull over and return the call or message.

  21. Your attention should be 100% on your driving — not your phone, or your hair, or your radio, etc etc. It only takes a split second of distraction to have an accident – stay safe & keep the phone calls, makeup, etc for after you’re done driving

  22. No Eating while driving – No make up while driving – No fixing your seat and or putting on your seat belt while driving, no texting while driving — all this should be done PRIOR to Driving!

  23. I always look twice when getting into a different lane. Motorcycles are tough to see so I just want to be that much more sure.

  24. Place your phone out of reach, back seat, in your purse under the seat, glove box, that way you are not tempted to use while driving 🙂

  25. Wear sunglasses when it’s bright! Sometimes the sun gets in your eyes and you struggle to see clearly. Shades can look cool and help at the same time!

  26. don’t eat while you drive…if you drip or drop something your instinct is to pick it up or wipe it off taking your eyes and hands from what they should be doing.

  27. Follow the speed limit. You’ll arrive safe and sound. I did my own test once with city driving and took the same route exactly at the speed limit and then took the same route going faster and in the end I did not make up any time because of streets lights so “do it right and do the limit”.

  28. leave 1 car length for every 10 mph you are going – and leave your cell phone in your pocket or bag – forget about it until you are done driving – NOTHING is that important to risk your life and others!

  29. All seatbelts have to be buckled before the car leaves the driveway.
And all cell phones have to be off and put away.

    jweezie43[at]gmail[dot]com

  30. Do not under any circumstances text or call while driving.
If need be, then pull over.
Also try not to eat while driving, it can be distracting.

  31. since I always seem to find someone at the gas stations who wants to hit my car, here is a tip related to gas stations, I just found out after driving all these years that on the dashboard of your car if it has a gas pump by your fuel setting that which ever side the handle of the pump is on is the side your gas tank is on. I don’t know why no one ever shared that with me. I am always driving a different car and now I don’t have to pull in then change pumps.

  32. Keep your vehicle weighted down in the rain and snow seasons with sand bags or kitty litter to help maintain control of your vehicle.

  33. never ignor a check engine light, low fuel light, or forget to change your oil. these things can lead to many car problems and put you and others in danger if your car were to malfunction due to one of these.

  34. If you get tired, don’t try to finish your trip, especially if your still far from your destination. Pull over and get some rest. You won’t regret it.
