Keto Friendly Snacks

Snacking is fun but not necessarily when you want to stick to a Keto (ketogenic) diet. I decided to seek out some Keto friendly snacks at Harris Teeter to help with my cravings between meals.

What is Ketosis?

The way I understand Ketosis is very simple and easy to explain. You’re essentially forcing your body to burn fat by depriving it of large amounts of carbohydrates (but not all carbohydrates) and keeping protein to a minimum. Your body actually loves to burn fat and fat is a better source of fuel for the brain and many other organs.

You’ll succeed at Keto and stay in a state of ketosis by NOT raising your insulin levels with sugar and too many simple carbohydrates. Once your body enters the ketosis phase after roughly 24 hours without sugars or much carbs, it will turn into a fat burning machine. 

I decided to try Keto last year and I was easily able to drop 10lbs in 8 weeks. I did some exercise but not vigorous. Incorporating Keto with Intermittent fasting gave me the best weight loss results.

Intermittent Fasting

Many of you may have heard of intermittent fasting before, but if not, here is a simple explanation. With Intermittent fasting, you’re eating within a small time frame during a 24 hour period. How long you decide to make your eating period depends on the individual but a minimum of 12 hours without eating is a great start. I enjoy fasting for 18 hours.

Each day I give myself a 6 hour window to eat my Keto friendly snacks and meals by eating between 2pm and 8pm. That doesn’t sound so crazy does it? After 8pm, I may have a cup of plain tea or hot water with lemon and then hit the sack around 10pm.

 

The Secret Is Sleep

This blog isn’t called Eighty Mph Mom for nothing. I am so busy during the day that it feels like there’s never enough time to get everything done, so I tend to stay awake late in the night to accomplish things. Doing this led to weight gain. I’d be awake at night working and snacking. Terrible idea!

Now, I try to get to bed at 10pm for at least 7 hours sleep. Your body burns fat while you sleep but not while it’s working on digesting food. I stop eating after 8pm and let my body clean out the fat while I’m knocked out. Doing this led to 2lbs weight loss seemingly overnight.

These were delicious but not addictive. It has dark chocolate, thick caramel, and peanuts. Pecan turtles are my favorite treat and these were very similar. I only wish they contained pecans since some people have peanut allergies, but I trust that Slim Fast knows what they’re doing in order to keep this snack Keto friendly

These were a big hit in my house! I like to have one for dessert with a cup of tea sometime before my 9pm cut off. Slim Fast Keto Fat Bombs were a bit pricey at Harris Teeter if you didn’t catch the sale, but you can find printable manufacturers coupons from Slim Fast online!

You get 14 individually wrapped pieces in each box which lasted my family of four about 1 week. I loved the portion size and the satisfaction you get biting into these chocolatey treats.

Are we being honest here? Ok, the texture of these toaster waffles takes some getting used to. They are a bit on the grainy side and seemed to crumbly in my mouth, but you may be used to that if you regularly try Keto or gluten free grain products.

The trick is to get them nice and hot with a little butter. Butter is great for my Keto diet so I like to use butter instead of syrup for this treat. Remember, sugar raises insulin so I try to avoid added sugars altogether. You don’t want to be knocked out of Ketosis and cause your body to STOP burning fat.

This soup is made with heavy cream and at only 4 grams of carbohydrates, it definitely fits into the Keto friendly category. I warmed this soup up in a pot on the cooktop and added a bit of salt and pepper. I loved this soup because the bone broth was made with healthy free-range chicken bones.

Free-range chickens are healthier and have stronger bones because they are allowed to live and run freely unlike the chickens kept in unsanitary and cruel chicken coops.
