KIDDE WORRY-FREE SMOKE ALARM

In light of the scorching west coast this year, fire safety has become more important than ever to California residents. While measures are being taken to reduce water intake and remove fire hazards, many are unaware of the recent changes in smoke alarm legislation.

As of July 1, 2015, replaceable battery operated smoke and carbon monoxide alarms will no longer be sold in California. Instead, the alarms sold under the approval of the state fire marshal must have a sealed battery that must last for 10 years. The National Fire Protection Agency, the standard of fire safety, states that 60% of all deaths related to fire occurred in homes that did not have a smoke alarm or in which the alarm did not work. The most common cause of alarms not working has been missing or dead batteries. While replacing the batteries may seem like such common sense, many people simply forget to replace them.

I myself have been guilty of removing the almost dead batteries to stop the obnoxiously loud beeping of the smoke alarm that is desperately trying to get my attention. Naturally, all these occurrences have been in the middle of the night, when my main focus is just trying to go back to sleep. What I should not worry about so much is the horrid noise and I should focus more on replacing the batteries. So even if I know the right thing to do is march downstairs to get replacement batteries, the smoke alarm is, at that point, very high on my ‘dislike’ list and not what I want to deal with in the middle of the night.

What if I told you that there is a smoke alarm that will last for 10 years, without having to replace batteries? Yes, it is true. I just discovered this myself, and I couldn’t be happier.
