When we were searching for our new home we came across quite a few surprises. Those odd, unexpected, little things that instantly changed our minds about a property were all over. From the “bathroom” that was literally shoved into (what should have been) a kitchen pantry to realizing that someone had built an addition onto a home while leaving the old roof accessible by an upstairs closet, shingles and all. The strangest thing, however, had to have been one house’s homemade security features.
There was one house that we came across that actually had bars on every single window (downstairs, upstairs, and even the third story attic!) despite the fact that it was located in a great and safe neighborhood. As if that weren’t enough to deter any possible burglars, the doors were staked shut. Yes, staked. I don’t even know how to begin describing this to you so bear with me. At the base of every single exterior and bedroom door there was a hole in the floor. To go along with these random holes were stakes, bolted to the bottom of each door. Similar to a sliding door lock that you see on public bathroom doors, these stakes (about the size of Jumbo Chalk) slid down into the floor, turning to lock into place. Now, surely, I’m all for safety but this was a bit much.
When we did decide on a home, we made sure to outfit it with updated locks, doorknobs, and hardware to cover our bases as far as safety is concerned. However, when it came to our back door, I wasn’t quite sure where to start. Thankfully, Master Lock was there to help.
When we moved in, there was a broom handle cut to fit and placed in the track of our sliding glass door. On top of the fact that this stick was a hideous eye sore in the room, it wasn’t exactly practical. After searching high and low for a replacement product with no luck and nearly giving up, Master Lock saved the day. They recently sent me their 265D Door Security Bar to try out.
…the optional top allows it to be used on standard hinged doors as well.
The Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar adjusts from 27.5” to 42” to fit most doors, both, standard and sliding. In either instance, the rugged 20-guage steel construction will, without a doubt, hold up to test and resist forced entry. Between the pivoting ball joint and its padded food, the 265D Door Security Bar will grab the floor with full contact in order to assure your home’s security without damaging the floor.
We added this to our own home and I’ve loved it thus far. I’ve had a few strong guys try to push through it and it held up through each attempt. Without budging, the Master Lock 265D Door Security Bar kept our home intruder free and, above all, safe.
Now that we’ve covered keeping the bad guys out, we’ll work on getting you in.
Once you assure the security of your home, you can rest easy… until you accidentally lock yourself out. Of course, knowing that Master Lock and its products can surely keep people out, it can be quite nerve racking when you’re the one that is mistakenly on the other side of the door. Typically, to resolve this issue should it ever occur, people often hide a spare key somewhere outside – under a doormat, on top of a light fixture, behind a plant, or another equally “hidden” spot. Unfortunately, however, most of us hide these spare keys in the same cliché locations. Burglars know this and, sadly, can just as easily pick them up for use.
Shortly after we set up our 265D Door Security Bar, we did lock ourselves out. Thankfully, Master Lock thought of that, too, and sent me their Storage Security Mounted Key Box to prevent exactly this. Wanting to help people securely store a spare key for their homes while simultaneously keeping it out of the wrong hands, Master Lock came up with this ingenious product.
The wall mounted safe can be secured to just about any wall via in-box screws and provides secure storage of keys and/or access cards. Outfitted with a familiar alphanumeric telephone-like keypad, it is easy to use. There is no need to memorize any random codes because, with the Master Lock Storage Security Mounted Key Box, you can set your very own combination code of up to twelve letters/numbers.
With large, easy-to-use buttons it is a great way to safely store your keys should you ever need it. Its wide, durable metal construction assures that your keys will stay safe in an easy-access storage box, meant for only you. The added protective weather-proof cover prevents freezing and jamming caused by dirt, rain, and ice and further guarantees the protected storage of your smallest, most important home valuable – the keys.
