Menopause and Perimenopause – Oh My Hot Flashes!

Help with Menopause

Menopause is no fun…neither is Perimenopause

Me...on fire

So this one time, at Sears.  Yes, I know that is not the correct way to start a sentence, but humor me here 🙂  This one time at Sears, when I was picking up my dad’s eyeglasses, I started getting flushes.  Really, really flushed.  My dad has a hard time getting out and about, so being the helpful daughter I am, I offered to go.  It was Spring, just an average day, nothing special going on with the weather.  All of a sudden my body and face were drenched with sweat.  What on earth was going on?  I thought I was going to pass out, as I became hotter and hotter.  I wanted to rip all of my clothes off, but I did have enough sense left not to do that {besides – that would have just been really rude for the people who were there getting their eyes examined}.

I frantically looked for an available clerk in the optical department, but they were all busy.  I had to get out of there right away.  I walked up to one clerk and told her that I just need to pick up glasses – they were ready and already paid for.  She wasn’t very nice as she told me she was with a customer.  But…but…it will only take a second.  I panicked slightly and headed for the door.  It seemed like an eternity before I saw daylight through the main door to the parking lot.  I have never been so happy to be outdoors.  After I cooled off, I headed back to the optical department and luckily they were able to help me quickly.

What was going on with me?  This happened time after time – the hot flashes, flushed feeling, and sweating even in the coldest weather.  I can’t begin to tell you how embarrassing it was to be sweating profusely whenever I went out.  Even at home, doing absolutely nothing {but sitting}, I would be drenched. I was also having trouble sleeping and I was missing periods {and no, I wasn’t pregnant}.  The thought of menopause crossed my mind, but I was only 42 at the time.  I made an appointment with my doctor, and she confirmed that I was perimenopausal.   Well wasn’t that just lovely?!?  The doctor asked if my mom had early menopause, and I remembered that she had.  I guess 42 isn’t too young at all for “the change”.

I was on a mission to find something that would help with these undesirable menopausal symptoms that I was experiencing.  I knew I didn’t want to do any type of hormone treatment, but there had to be a way to help me feel better. I found some vitamins that did offer a little relief, but ultimately I have suffered with this for a couple of years. I am now 45 and for the past year I haven’t been having the hot flashes {thank goodness!}, but I know they will be back. And they will be back with a vengeance. I recently learned about Estroven, and you can bet your bum that I will be trying them when my unpleasant symptoms return.

Estroven products are all-natural and help women with the symptoms of menopause. According to the Estroven website:

Estroven® products are herbal supplements made with all-natural ingredients to provide natural menopause symptom relief. Black cohosh plus soy isoflavones are combined with essential nutrients like calcium, folic acid, and B-vitamins. These work naturally in the body to help reduce hot flashes, night sweats, and other menopausal symptoms. Hundreds of thousands of women trust Estroven® products every year, and pharmacists recommend them 3 to 1 over other brands of menopause supplements.* I would much prefer to use natural products than any type of hormones.

Here is a tip from yours truly {I quickly learned learned this while going through hot flashes}. Never, ever, leave the house bundled up. Layer, layer, layer. I always wore a tank top or camisole under some other shirt. I didn’t wear sweaters or heavy jackets. You want to be able to peel off your clothes down to the lightest possible layer, at a moments notice.

The first few times I dealt with the effects of perimenopause, it was quite frightening. Many women don’t know what is happening to them when it starts. Now looking at this list, I see a few more things that I didn’t even know were related to perimenopause! Forgetful? Yep – that’s me!  Moody?  We won’t even go there.   Here are some of the symptoms – hopefully you will be armed with the knowledge that I was not:

Here are some of the most common menopause symptoms.

  • Changes in menstrual periods
  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Forgetfulness
  • Moodiness
  • Changes in urination
  • Weight gain and shift
  • Headache
  • Palpitations
  • Joint pain
  • Loss of bone density
  • Skin, hair, and eye changes
  • Other perimenopause and menopause symptoms

  1. I understand what you are going through. It felt so good to read your description of what you felt at Sears. Used to happen to me all of the time. I knew what it was from the beginning, and it is finally over. That said, I will have a hot flash if I eat something with sugar. But, even that is getting better as they aren’t as hot feeling as they used to be. Let me tell you that woman go through this. It is a sign that your body is changing. “Getting older isn’t for sissys” as they say.

I hope you feel better! By the way, my mom hardly had a hot flash. Sigh…lucky!

  2. Having had a hysterectomy at 35, I began perimenopause very early so I know JUST how you feel… 10 years later, I am doing much better using some of these natural remedies.
I only wish it would get over soon. :-/
