Moving Day Disasters (And How To Avoid Them)

moving day stress and disasters

So, you’re planning a house move. Exciting, right? Before too long, you will be in your new home and enjoying your new surroundings. Here’s hoping the house move goes well! But as we all know, life doesn’t always run smoothly. And especially when moving house, all kinds of things could go wrong during the day of your move. Here are a few examples of moving day disasters.

Disaster #1: Breakages

When moving house, you will be taken most of your valuable items with you. We are thinking of your expensive kitchen appliances, living room furnishings, television, and other large items that could potentially get damaged en route to your new property. Some of your smaller items could get damaged too, such as your crockery that might end up in pieces if they haven’t been packed securely.

Solution:

To protect your smaller items, surround them with bubble wrap, and don’t leave any empty spaces in your moving boxes. Don’t pack too many heavy items in one box to avoid the risk of somebody dropping the box when carrying it. And use generous amounts of wrapping tape if you are using cardboard boxes to prevent them from buckling under the weight of the items that are contained inside.

For the actual move, only rely on people you trust to protect your items when traveling to your new home. Look online for professional movers and choose to use the services of local or interstate removalists that offer moving insurance to cover any potential damage to your precious belongings.

Disaster #2: Missing pets

Your goldfish is unlikely to go missing on moving day and the chances of your pet tortoise getting very far are slim. But if you have a cat or a dog, they might go walkabout if any doors are left open, so your move might be delayed if you are forced to tour the area looking for them.

Solution:

Ask somebody to look after your pets on the day of your move. This could be a professional pet sitter or a kennel service or you could ask a friend or family member to look after your four-legged friends.

Alternatively, secure your pets inside your house. You could leave them in a particular room with the door shut or you could purchase a pet cage to hold them. Just don’t forget to take them with you when you’re finally ready to close the door of your old home.

Disaster #3: Furniture not fitting through the door

After arriving at your new home, you’ll want to get your belongings inside as soon as possible. But what if the sofa doesn’t fit through the door? Or the dining table? If you can’t get your larger items inside your house, you might have to spend your days living in the garden!

Solution:

Measure your larger items before the move and get measurements for the doorways to your new home. If you realize your furniture might be too big, remove the legs from your sofa or table if that’s possible, or take the hinges off the door when you arrive at the property. Of course, if you are hiring professional movers, they may be able to fit your furniture into the house, despite their large size, as they should be familiar with the problems large items can cause.
