I remember when I started blogging, and there were so many things I didn’t know how to do. There were plenty of tutorials online, but many were too complex for me to comprehend, since this was all relatively new to me. Now that some time has gone by and experience has been gained, why not share a bit of my knowledge with you {using simple terms}? Experienced website owners and bloggers may not understand what the big deal is – it’s just a link, but again, when just starting out with a new website, it is completely overwhelming – there is just so much to learn.
For those feeling overwhelmed by the complexities of managing a new website, seeking guidance from experienced professionals or enrolling in courses offered by Debug Academy can provide invaluable insights and support in navigating the learning curve.
This is a quick tutorial on how to link to a website.
Most bloggers are on WordPress these days, so I am going to show you how to link to a website from the WordPress platform.
In WordPress, when composing a blog post, there are two modes – visual and text. You can do this from either mode but it is easier to explain {and most likely for you to learn} from visual mode, so let’s do it that way.
Example:
Let’s say you are writing a post about refreshing summertime desserts, or an upcoming party you are hosting and you want to link to an amazing Lemon Angel Food Cake recipe you recently saw while browsing online. Here is what you have written:
“Just about any summertime dessert would suffice at this party, however since the color scheme was primarily yellow, I thought that this light Lemon Angel Food Cake would be perfect for our afternoon event.”
*First, highlight Lemon Angel Food Cake
*Next, click on the white arrow in the blue box
*Finally, a box will popup for you to enter the url of where your link should lead. Enter your url in the box.
That’s it – now you know how to link to a website! See? It’s not that hard at all!
If you aren’t a visual person, all you have to do is highlight the phrase {anchor text} that you want to be the clickable link, and click the “link” icon {it looks kind of like a paper clip}. A box will pop up and all you do is enter the webpage address where you want the link to go.
Anchor text matters
When you are linking to another website {or blog}, it is best to link from words that are specific and relevant, such as your desired “anchor text”. You don’t want to link from words like “click here” or “here”, etc.
Speaking of links, I just published a post on how to get the link to a Facebook post, that I hope you will find helpful.
If you are a new blogger with other blogging related questions, feel free to leave them in the comments below. I will do my best to answer them!

LOL God love ya. I am so glad you posted this, because I know how many people aren’t aware of how such a small thing like a link can actually make a big difference for the blogger. I sure didn’t at first!
Thanks LOL – I got to thinking – why not just post about it?!
You have got to be kidding me? It’s that easy? I had my husband write an HTML code that I have saved to my desktop where I can just add the url and the words to click on and I enter it into the HTML tab….all this time….all this time!! Thanks for the tip…this should definitely make the process go faster!!!
LOL – yep! That’s all there is to it! It will automatically put the code in there for you. If you were linking, say something on your sidebar, that’s when the html coding would be used! I hope it helps!
Great info that is easy! I’ve had a blog for 2 years now but I do all my coding with html and never did it this way before. I might just give it a try! Of course though it is easy to link with html too. It’s just this:
I’ve been doing the “click here” for readers who don’t know that you can click on the name to activate the link…. why is that bad?
Part of the reason bloggers want to entrants to blog about their giveaways is to help spread the word. The other reason is it helps a blogger in search engines. By doing “click here” it doesn’t help the blogger in search engines. Does that help at all? LOL If not, shoot me an email okay?
So many people use the word HERE. Go here, even when they are writing a post for sponsors, SEO is just as easy as what you are posting here. Great instructions!
Thank you! Right – click here, or here or any of those are horrible for SEO, especially for sponsors. Hopefully this will help!
This is an interesting article. Thanks for sharing.
Very helpful
This is interesting. I have a contest blog that I only post giveaways on. I always give the blog name doing the giveaway, but then say “click here” to enter. It would be better to re-word it?
Yes…much better! I would just put the emphasis/link on the blog name. There are several reasons for this – it will help your blog and the bloggers blog in searches.
Maybe I will do 2 links or something because I can’t think of how to phrase it LOL
Jennifer, so super I had to post it on my site! If you have any other gems like this and want to do a guest post, let me know!!! (I actually am going to be away in August and could use a few posts to flesh out the blog while I’m away!)
Hope you like it!
Thank you so much for the kind words – I appreciate it!
Great post! It is hard to know what the right way to do some things is. Thanks!
Ahhh I have been blogging more about contests and I did mention the person’s blog with a link but when I got to the part about entering the contest, I just said go HERE! DOH! Thanks!!!!
You are most welcome – I’m glad it helped. Thanks for stopping by!
Thanks. I have been doing this for a little bit now. As i did not know how to do things on my blog at one time. I am also still learning so it is nice when people help out. But i also have been doing the link to the blog and one for the company that is doing the giveaway when entering blog giveaways, As i feel it helps both.
Thank you for this information. It was so helpful.
You are most welcome – glad it helped!
I would really like to learn how to put buttons at the bottom of my blog horizontally. I would also like to learn how to install my own tweet button in very easy to understand lingo. I use blogger.
Thx again

Hi Jennifer
Thank you for the Twitter button link. I tried to do what the instructions say but l just could not find the code . I had a gal create a blog design for me so is it possible that code was removed? Or do l just have to look harder? Would this code be near the top? Oh.. l have so much to learn. Thanks if you can help.

Okay it will be in your HTML section. Make sure you backup/save first before fooling with your html! Then there is a button to “expand html”. You can click on that and it will bring up more of your html. Then you can “Control +F” to find one of the words (that they say to add the coding in between) and hopefully that will lead you to the area you need to be in. I’ll take a look in my old blogger stuff and see what I can find for you too 🙂
you rock! It dirves me nuts the HERE
Thank you! That drives me nuts too lol
I am a new blogger so any tips are great. Thanks for the information it really helps!!!!

Thanks for all the blogging tips. I bought a Dummies guide to WordPress and still have not put my blog out there because I still can’t do things, like add buttons (mine or others). Do you know how stupid you feel, when a Dummies book is too hard,LOL?
A lot of giveaways give extra entries for adding their blog button. Could you tell us how to do that on WordPress, please? Also, some say put button on blog and then give you more extra entries if you add it to your blogroll. I don’t understand, obviously they want their button in 2 spots on my blog, but where and what is the difference that makes it a blogroll.
Thanks again for all the wonderful posts and help.
