Teach children about finances with DoughMain!

dough main

We started giving our children allowances when they were old enough to begin to grasp the meaning of money, and when they were also able to complete even the easiest of chores. We didn’t use a chart of any sort, but as they grew older, they learned that there were certain chores that were to be done each and every day. If they’d “forget” too many times in a week, their allowance amount was reduced for that week.

I recently discovered DoughMain – an awesome family organizer and money management program for kids (and to help adults keep track!). Although my kids are now 15 and 22, I can’t help but think how much I would have enjoyed this program and how much easier it would have been to assign not only chores, but general tasks that were their own responsibility.

DoughMain is a free financial education and family organization website developed to educate both children and young adults about the value of money and the importance of money matters, while keeping the family organized.

I have been exploring the DoughMain website and it’s really neat! Your children receive “dough points” when they complete a task. These points can be accumulated for various tasks, including game play. With game play, kids can play age appropriate games to learn to be responsible while still having fun.

online money games for kids

You (the parent) decides the value of dough points – you might choose to make them worth real money, privileges, or anything else you desire.

Here is a video that explains DoughMain a little more:

I think it is a great idea that kids can look up their “account” to see how many dough points they have. They can also choose to get notifications via email or by messages from DoughMain.

chore chart

There are so many neat features at DoughMain – you’ll have to check it out to see all that it has to offer. I love the fact that it takes the guesswork out of whether a chore/task has been completed. You will also find an online forum, if you have questions or just want to talk to and learn from other parents. I can only imagine how efficiently things would have been run in our household if DoughMain was around when my kids were younger. I certainly could have used the help!

To help get your kids started with money management, DoughMain has so kindly let me host a giveaway!

  1. Just had the argument today after school about kids thinking they are working WAY harder than the other…pppsshhht…they dont know what chores ARE! So, that chore tracker would be so nice!. No more saying MooooooOOOOOm she doesn’t do NOoooothhhinnnnng around here. They could just keep track themselves and would leave ME without hounding them. Plus, that calendar feature would be really nice. We are almost at the end of 3 sports in the house and still have yet to post a real calendar with their game dates on it. Organization=Peace and I have not have a moment of either in about 30 years of having kids (and now grandkids) in the house. grr…teens are the hardest though.

  2. I commented on your post about you getting rid of your Pinterest Account and maybe some regrets?

    Posted comment 5/24 (Eileen)

  3. My favorite is the “Saving and Spending” because helps children young with their money skills by viewing and keeping track of their bank balances. It also lets parents keep track of all the family member accounts in one place!

  4. I think the most beneficial to our family is their Allowance and Rewards Tracker. That way it will help me to stay fair and can remember what I’ve done for each grandson.

  5. The chore/task chart would really help us out. We’ve been trying to impliment a chore routine with our kids, but they don’t complete their chores half the time. Love this idea.
    Thanks so much.

  6. I loved the Chores organizer. My girls are growing up and I want them to be responsible for their room, bed and also some small things around the house like organizing grocery. this will be a great tool to do that.

  7. Since my kids are 4 and 6, the Fun Vault game would benefit them so they can learn more about money basics.

  8. I subscribe to your RSS feed through Google Reader- travelcitiesATaolDOTcom

  9. The Saving and Spending features would help us most to organize our budget!

  10. Visited the site and the most helpful part for us would be the online family calendar because it is so hard to keep track of what everyone is upto some days!

  11. I like the retail gift card feature that tracks and keep the balance of your gift card.

  12. I love the chore tracker. I think this could be very useful in my house.

  13. the chore tracker would be the most helpful, we tried doing this growing up but all we had was a sheet of paper and wrote in tick marks next to each chore

  14. My own kids are grown now, but the chore/task chart would have been nice for them to keep track and get rewarded.

  15. The online family calender and the spend save and especially give would be of great help to us! 🙂

  16. The chore/task chart would really help us out to keep track of which chores each child needs to do and has done.

  24. I love the money games they have (for free) that are tailored to kids’ ages. I am a huge fan of fun teaching software. These games sound great and I’m going to pass the info along to my niece and nephew.

  25. This would be such a big help to us – Family Calendar!
