Last weekend was our first camping trip of the summer! I try to keep the packing list and meal plans simple {for my sanity’s sake}. In a primal nutshell, we brought meat, nuts, and produce. But I knew I’d need to bring milk for Luv. Instead of lugging a gallon of milk that took up precious room in the cooler, Tetra Pak sent us some shelf safe milk to try.[*] I stashed a few in our chuck box before we journeyed into the forest.
There area number of brands that offer milk in shelf safe Tetra Pak milk boxes {my personal favorite being Organic Valley}. Aseptic Tetra Pak containers allow for milk to be kept at room temperature, giving them a longer shelf life. I simply tossed one in the cooler before our hike to let it chill so she could enjoy a cold drink when we returned to camp.
And enjoy it, she did!
Noteworthy Mentions:
1. I would prefer the shelf safe organic whole milk by Organic Valley {though the packaging is not exactly tailored to children} mainly because my family appreciates full fats in our diet.
2. I also have to note the amount of sugar {aside from the natural sugar lactose} in the flavored milk is higher than I am comfortable with.
Honestly, I have no problem letting Luv drink a milk box {especially if it were organic whole milk} now and then. But considering how we eat; the flavored shelf stable milk will remain a rare treat. I couldn’t write this review without addressing those two points. I will say that I would prefer her to drink an organic flavored milk on occasion as opposed to a soda or other “juice” box drink.
Milk Unleashed:
Tetra Pak milk boxes are the same containers you’ve seen in the grocery aisle {even in your pantry, I bet!}. Designed specifically to keep air out, block light and other harmful contaminants. Stow in the picnic basket, stash for road trips, and {forgive me for mentioning it so soon, but…} add to the lunchbox for back to school. Tetra Pak’s shelf safe milk boxes retain milk’s quality without using a fridge or use of preservatives. For up to six months! You can buy in bulk and store them safely in your pantry – just keep a handful or so chilled in the fridge, depending on how fast your family enjoys them. I love that I can recycle the Tetra Pak cartons, too!

In UHT treatment, milk is exposed to brief, intense heating to temperatures in the range of 275-284 degrees Fahrenheit for only three seconds. Most importantly, UHT treatment is a continuous process which takes place in a closed system that prevents the product from being contaminated by airborne micro-organisms
