Three New Books from Skyhorse Publishing and Sky Pony Press

Many of the products featured on Eighty MPH Mom are either for moms, babies, or young children.  But since our readers are moms with children of all ages, I am excited to talk about something for older children – specifically, three wonderful books from Skyhorse Publishing and Sky Pony Press!

Skyhorse Publishing is an independent publisher of many different genres of books, and Sky Pony Press is the children’s book division of Skyhorse Publishing.  Sky Pony Press publishes books for a wide variety of children’s interests and for all ages – fiction, picture books, educational books, classics, and more!  A few months ago, I reviewed some children’s books from Skyhorse Publishing and Sky Pony Press, and I was excited to receive three books for children ages 8-12 – Henry Hunter and the Beast of Snagov, Monsterville: A Lissa Black Production, and Just a Drop of Water.

Henry Hunter and the Beast of Snagov, by John Matthews, is about two twelve year-old boys, Henry Hunter and Adolphus Pringle, who go on adventures around the world in search of supernatural creatures.  In this book, Henry takes Adolphus to Transylvania in search of the Beast of Snagov – a terrifying creature believed to be the first vampire.  On their journey, they join forces with the daughter of Dracula to fight a group of people that want to awaken the Beast of Snagov and become immortal.  The story is told from Adolphus’ perspective.  You learn at the end of the book that Adolphus is telling stories of his adventures with Henry because Henry is missing, and Adolphus is looking for any clues as to his whereabouts.  The book ends “To Be Continued…” and I immediately got online to search for the next book in the series (which is tentatively planned for Spring 2017).  I loved this book and cannot wait to read about more adventures of Henry and Adolphus!

Monsterville: A Lissa Black Production, by Sarah S. Reida, is about thirteen year-old Lissa Black, who moves from New York City to small-town Freeburg, Pennsylvania with her parents and little sister, Haylie.  Lissa is unhappy about the move, especially when she encounters monsters in the woods near her house.  Lissa and her new friend, Adam, trap a monster (Blue) who has escaped from Down Below (the monster world) because he does not know what kind of monster he should become.  Lissa, Adam, and Haylie befriend Blue, and soon learn that Blue used to be a child who was taken to Down Below and turned into a monster.  Other children are in danger of being turned into monsters on Halloween night, and it is up to Lissa and Adam to protect Haylie.  However, when Haylie is snatched by a monster right in front of Lissa, she enters Down Below with Adam and Blue to save Haylie and try to turn Blue back into a child.  They make it through Down Below by following the clues left behind by Lissa’s aunt, who who had been to Down Below herself.  I thought this was a really enjoyable story, and it ended in a way that made me think that there may be more books about Lissa and Adam.  I certainly hope so!

Finally, Just a Drop of Water, by Kerry O’Malley Cerra, is set in the days leading up to and following September 11, 2001.  The book is about Jake Green, an eighth grader whose only concern is beating the rival school at the next cross-country meet with his best friend, Sam.  Things change for Jake on September 11 – Sam gets beat up for being an Arab Muslim, Sam’s father is detained and questioned by the FBI as one of the hijackers lived in their town and was a customer at the bank where Sam’s father worked, and Jake has to deal with his mother who has become overly-protective and doubts whether Sam’s family is completely innocent.  This book is a great read about prejudices faced by many people in this country after the tragedy of September 11.  As middle-school age children were not even alive at the time of September 11, I think this is a great way to teach them about what it was to live through the attacks and the aftermath.  The book even contains a number of discussion questions that teachers can use with their students.  My husband really wanted to read this book  and would love to have students read it when learning about September 11.

I was so excited to add these three books to our collection.  They were enjoyable for me to read (even as an adult), and I know my girls will enjoy them as they get a little older.  I love reading and these books were fun and easy reads for me.  My husband also thinks they would be good books for his middle-school classroom library.
