My oldest daughter will be starting kindergarten in the fall, and one of the things that I am most excited for is when she learns to read. I have always loved reading and want to pass that love on to my girls. We have shelves full of books for them to enjoy, and they are always excited when I bring home new books as well. That is why I was thrilled to receive five new books from

My Grandpa is a Dinosaur, by Richard Fairgray and Terry Jones, is about a little girl named Wanda who is certain that her grandpa is a dinosaur – he is green, has a tail, and roars. However, nobody believes her! So she decides to ask her grandpa – “Are you a dinosaur?” This was a very silly book, and the illustrations were great. My girls laughed and laughed at the pictures and pointed out all of the funny things the characters were doing.
In
Watch the Birdie, by Nancy Cote, Mousey sees a baby bird fall out of its next in a tree. The poor bird cannot get back up to its nest because it cannot fly. Mousey asks other animals to help get the bird back up in its nest, but they have to hurry before the hungry cat gets to them! Luckily, the baby bird starts flapping its wings and is able to fly and save Mousey from the cat, landing them safely in the nest. I liked how this book really taught about helping others, and that sometimes you are able to do things that you did not think you could. There are also a bunch of fun and colorful illustrations to go along with this story.
My girls really loved
How the Crayons Saved the Rainbow, by Monica Sweeney and Feronia Parker-Thomas. This book is about the sun and clouds, who were best friends and loved making rainbows together. However, they got into a fight and never wanted to be in the sky together. That means there were no more rainbows and the world began losing its color, until everything was just black and white. Luckily, there was a box of crayons that had been left in a desk that still had their colors. It is up to the crayons to save the day, which they do by drawing rainbows everywhere, including the biggest and brightest rainbow ever! Both the sun and the clouds notice the big rainbow, with all of its wonderful colors, and realize they used to make such beautiful rainbows. They apologize and hug, with rainbows appearing and making the world colorful again. I like the story of friendship and how good things happen when we get along with each other.
Izzy the Very Bad Burglar, by Amy Proud, is about a girl, Izzy, who comes from a family of burglars. But Izzy is not very good at being a burglar – she feels sick to her stomach when she takes something that does not belong to her! She tries to do good things for the families that she steals from, like cleaning their house or baking them treats, but she still feels bad. She does not think the bad feeling will ever go away, until she realizes that she is actually helping these families, not only by making their houses neat and clean, but also by relieving them of their clutter! In the end, she realizes that she is actually a great burglar and helper. While I don’t necessarily want my girls to become burglars, I liked how the story taught that they should feel bad when they do something that they shouldn’t and that helping others will make you feel good.
Finally,
My Amazing Dad, by Ezekiel Kwaymullina and Tom Jellett, is a great book for all of those dads who don’t fit into the definition of what a dad should be. These are the dads who are not great at the typical “dad” chores or fixing things around the house, the dads who cannot bake, and the dads who cannot remember bedtime. However, these dads are still great because they spend time with their children, entertain them, and love them. I would definitely recommend this book as a Father’s Day gift, as I think children and dads will really enjoy reading it together.
