Are you looking for ways to keep the kiddos quiet in the car? Are you sick of listening to the same kid’s music over and over? Maybe you just want to limit screen time. Whatever the need, there is a solution! It’s Stories Podcast, the free show for kids that presents a fun new audio story every week.
They do all kinds of stories – everything from classics like Snow White and Velveteen Rabbit to completely original new stories. All of them are performed like professional audiobooks, with different voices for all of the characters, and fun songs woven throughout the stories.
What is really neat about Stories Podcast is that they have updated many of the classic stories to get rid of the bad cliches. They don’t have helpless princesses that are waiting for a man to come save them. Their princesses can help themselves, and if they have a damsel in distress, she can figure it out on her own! I particularly love this!
Of course there are a lot of great episodes for boys too. Check out the episode “Max Goodname and the Magic Armor” It was awarded as “New and Noteworthy” by Apple and it is appropriate for the whole family. The story is about a young squire who is trying to become a knight at the King’s tournament. Along the way, he befriends a young wizard and a big-hearted cleric. It’s a lot of fun!

The best part about Stories Podcast is how it inspires imagination. Since it’s only audio, children have to use their imagination a little, like classic radio dramas. Plus, it is nice to be able to have a show that is just for kids to enjoy while in the car. I listen to a lot of talk radio and kids tend find it boring – they always ask for THEIR show.
Kids can also listen at home, which is helpful when you are trying to limit screen time. You just might be amazed at how quiet they are without the television on.

If you have never listened to podcasts, they are pretty interesting, and a great source of entertainment. Basically, they are radio shows that you play on demand. You can stream them from the website, or through an app on your phone. If you have an iPhone, you probably already have the podcasts app installed since it comes pre-installed on all new iPhones. If you are on android, you can download a podcast app called “Stitcher.” Once you have the app, just open it and search for “Stories Podcast”. Just look for the Stories Podcast logo (above) in the app store!
Make sure you subscribe so you get new stories automatically, as they are released. If you don’t have a smartphone handy, you can also go to storiespodcast.com and listen there.
