We are all shopping like crazy trying to get that perfect gift right?  Our children are being bombarded by the media into thinking we need certain characters under that tree.  My oldest is now 8 and I get it.  New modern characters are fun, for a short time.  I normally buy our kids a single character item (pj’s, doll, book, you get the idea) but you want to know something?  My youngest daughter who is now 4 doesn’t play with the same characters that my 8 year old “had to have”.  I learned from those much  much wiser than I am to buy quality toys that will last and not be some fad gone tomorrow.

My daughter who is now 4 1/2 years old was not talking 2 years ago.  That is really hard to believe because she has come so far since then.  Through speech therapy and hours of our family working with her I am very proud to say Ruby has “graduated” from her speech program.  For me that was very hard because I know she still struggles.  Her vocabulary isn’t where other 4 1/2 year olds might be.  I was sent Word Joggers for Catergories and it is amazing!  First off I have to comment about the quality of the game.  I noticed it immediately by the box, not like a game box you buy at a big box store but a box that will last.  Inside the box you will find a molded plastic tray that separates the chips, cards, playing boards, spinner, and instructions.  The instructions that come with Word Joggers is a booklet explaining how to play the game but also has a Progress Chart, Visual Map Organizer, and the entire Vocabulary Word List for the games.  There are so many different game ideas in the Instructional Booklet teaching the parents numerous ways to help your child.  The playing cards are very nice and all of the pictures are easily recognizable.  Not every game uses the spinner but it is a nice change of pace.  The chips are colored plastic chips and the game boards are the same sturdy cardboard that the cards of made from.

Having us all play Word Joggers together and having Ruby say what the card is aloud helps me to see where she is still struggling with pronunciation and also is aiding her in building a good solid vocabulary that a 4 year old should have.  Super Duper Publications Word Jogger retails for $64.95 but I wish I had it years earlier.  The many games you can play make Word Joggers more than a game on the shelf, it is an excellent education tool for your family.  I highly recommend this one!  We are having a ball with it and when we grow out of it I am going to donate it to our schools Speech Therapy department.  Not that we are going to grow out of it anytime soon because the 8 year old girl asks to play it with me all the time!

I was also very fortunate enough to receive and review the Story Prediction Cards with their very own Super Duper Secret Decoders.  Over Thanksgiving we had 6 girls (ages 4-9) all playing it together.  The older girls were better at predicting the end results but the 6 & 7 year olds got the most out them as they got more answers wrong.  We had the girls sit in a circle and the older girls read their cards then read to the 4 year olds.  The fun part was when each girl would choose their answer for their card they got to use that Super Duper Secret Decoder to check and see if they were correct.  Fun!  They enjoyed the cards, took turns nicely, and learned.  Fun and learning!  That is what it is all about right?

When Ruby had Speech Therapy in our home privately the therapist had the Photo Fish Game.  It was one of the first games that I really noticed a break through.  She loved the game and her therapist kept bringing it over because of this.  Ruby started to feel more comfortable and the words started pouring out.  Well, not pouring because it is a process but for her mama it felt like they were pouring!  I can’t speak for what works for other families but if you have a child who is speech delayed this game rocks!  It allows you to tell them the word correctly, let them do an activity of fishing (I mean who doesn’t love fishing?), and then you will be rewarded with your child saying the word back to you.  No better feeling!
