Target Celebrates Black History Month

Target celebrates black history month with a limited edition clothing line created by black designers. It’s Target’s way of supporting black owned businesses by giving them a wider platform to showcase their products.

This year, Black History Month is all about the Black team members, designers, visionaries and entrepreneurs behind our exclusive product assortment and the latest in our Black Beyond Measure marketing campaign.

Target’s Black Beyond Measure Campaign

I love this campaign because it features designs from 6 black co-creators. They have everything from apparel, jewelry and accessories, to toys, books, and even stationary.

Target’s display was very eye catching and quite bold. I picked up a comfy sweatshirt and earrings to match. There was also the option to purchase matching sweatpants but I left those behind because the pattern was a bit much for me.

I spent quite a bit of time browsing Target’s Black History Month merch and displays because of their wide variety of goods. I liked how the tags were a way to feature each designer or business. Many items were already sold out!

Target Celebrates Black History Month All Year

In a write up from their corporate team, Target mentions that 86% of the line was created with black designers or by a black owned business. They also boast that the “majority” of the line was a collaboration of black businesses or artists.

Outside of black history month, Target has made an effort to give black owned businesses a boost via their “Buy Black” page. There you can find over 1,000 products from black owned brands that have been able to land deals with target. Many of the products are available online as well as in stores.

I think Target’s efforts to celebrate black history throughout the year and prop up black brands is a win win situation because it’s a huge opportunity for black designers.  We can support them by buying black at Target

Their website is a great place tofind these products because you can have the items delivered to your door.

2021 HBCU Design Challenge Winners

Target celebrates black history month by featuring designs by 3 of Target’s HBCU Design Challenge Winners of 2021. Applications for 2022 winners to be featured in the 2023 line will close on February 28th. If you attend a historically black college or university, live in the 50 states, and are 18 or older, you can apply for this challenge.

Winners receive $3,000 cash prize along with a few other high tech gifts like the Oculus Quest 2 and the latest iMac. I bet what students really appreciate though is the opportunity to have a 1 hour consultation with Target’s senior design team.

From what I saw at my local Target superstore, the line of t-shirts and graphics from the winners were colorful and up lifting.
