Why it is tempting to give up my job…and move somewhere far away!

Living in the Amazon

Have you ever just thought of up and leaving to see what else is out there? I do this occasionally, and although I would probably never follow through with it, I sometimes daydream about what it would be like to live a different lifestyle and culture.

For instance, the Amazon would be pretty darned interesting I think! Granted, it would be very, very different than what I am accustomed to, but I am intrigued. Why, you might ask? For one thing, it looks absolutely beautiful.

How fun would it be to wake up each morning and and jump right in the water? That would definitely wake me up!  I would just have to watch out for the catfish – they are MUCH bigger (up to 200 lbs!) than the ones we are used to here, since they have so much space to grow.  I picture myself taking it easy all day long (and probably getting a pretty awesome tan), and wind down at the end of the day by taking another dip in the water.

This video here shows even more reasons to escape to the Amazon:

Wildlife

I love wildlife, but around these neck of the woods, I only see raccoons, skunks, squirrels, opossum and our average birds. I do enjoy these critters but it would be fun to get up close and personal with new wildlife (maybe not too close with some!).

Can you say gorgeous? These birds (maybe parrots?) are absolutely stunning. I don’t think I could ever get tired of looking at them. They are so bright and cheerful, as are several other types of birds in the Amazon:

Look at the monkey! I believe this is a Capuchin Monkey, but don’t quote me on this. I would absolutely love to hold one of these little guys while going about my daily business. They look very friendly, and by the look on the faces of the people in the photos below, they seem to be well liked. Maybe they are even kept as pets?  I have no idea, but I would totally be okay with that.

Living in the Amazon would definitely be a HUGE change. I would be “roughing it” in many ways, but life would also be simpler (and less stressful) in several other ways. I imagine people in the amazon don’t take anything for granted. They work hard for all they have, and get by with so much less than we have here. The children there don’t have all of the modern conveniences (and electronics) that we have, but that just might be a good thing – they use their imaginations, just like I did as a child. Sometimes I crave the way things used to be back in the “good old days”, and I just might find it in the Amazon.

Living off the land

I know I would also enjoy the fresh picked and fresh caught food each day. I don’t know how good I would be at catching fish, but maybe I could sweet talk someone into catching them for me, if I pick some fruit for them. I’m resourceful like that! Fresh fish cooked over an open flame? Yes please!

The locals

The people of the Amazon just seem really nice. It would be fun to hang out with them and learn their culture, play with the kids, learn how to paint my face (they are pretty talented when it comes to this!), and prepare food as they do.

I think I would learn so much by living in the Amazon. Would I be able to handle it long term? I’m not sure, but it would be fun to give it a try. What do you think you would like about living in the Amazon? Where do you think would be a neat place to visit?
