Before my daughter memorized the 50 states it was hard for her to wrap her head around the idea that not everyone lived in Washington. So when she learned that not everyone is from America, she insisted on learning more. “Where do they live? What do they do there?” I answered as best I could, of course. But sometimes it is better that she answer her own questions. I encourage her to seek knowledge whenever she can.
The Adventures of Bella & Harry is a book series that follows two Chihuahuas around as the explore the sights of a new city. It’s a great way to introduce children to other cultures, customs, tourist attractions, and brief history of other countries!
These posh pups are definitely not your average worldly traveler, but I suspect that is what captured Luv’s attention. “These dogs travel, Momma!”
As she read The Adventures of Bella & Harry Let’s Visit Edinburgh she learned a bit about the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. And, no, I’m not talking ink. It is the annual festival with military musicians playing drums and, of course, bagpipes. She also learned about the Edinburgh castle, family crests, falconry, and more. I especially got a kick out of Luv saying Loch Ness, she kept saying it as if it rhymed with “watch”.
Next, she read The Adventures of Bella & Harry Let’s Visit Rome! Gladiators abound. Luv learned all about the Roman Colosseum which is one of the most visited landmarks in Rome. She also learned about Circus Maximus and chariot races, antipasto {yum!}, and The Spanish Steps. Now anytime she sees the world map in our lesson room she points out Italy and says, “Here’s the boot!” *chuckle*
I enjoyed listening to her read these books to me and I love the illustrations especially. The dogs’ eyes are so sweet! In each book, there is a map to show where the pups are traveling to. Also helpful, is the fun common words and phrases comparing how we say it in English to how it is said in Italian or Scottish.
Let your child{ren} put a few stamps on their pretend play passport by visiting different countries with Bella & Harry! The books we received are numbers seven and eight in the series. Paris, Venice, London, Cairo, Athens, Barcelona, Istanbul and Jerusalem are also available. I know Luv wants each of them and I would be happy to add the series to her bookshelf! Something tells me she will me a traveler…
