Learning Sign Language with The Baby Signing Book Second Edition Review and Giveaway
When it comes to babies and children, often times things are lost in translation. Little ones just aren’t equipped with the necessary vocabulary or communication skills to explain their feelings, what they want/need, why they are upset, etc. That is precisely why I taught myself {and The Mister} some very basic signs after Luv forged our family years ago. Now we use the same basic sign language with Bugsy – even Luv signs with him – and he has signed for us a few times! So when I had the opportunity to check out The Baby Signing Book, Second Edition I was excited to expand my sign language “vocabulary”.

The Baby Signing Book, Second Edition is an updated bestselling baby signing course by Sara Bingham that is broken down into three parts. Intro to signing with babies and young children, illustrated dictionary with 450 American Sign Language {ASL} symbols, and songs/rhymes you and your child{ren} can sign together.

The signs I knew before receiving the book:
* Eat * More * Finished *Hurt * Thank you * Please * Help * Daddy and Momma * Sissy and Brother

Now, I have a plethora of signs at my fingertips that I will put to great use as Bugsy develops and learns. I can’t wait to see just how much Bugsy will be able to communicate with us by putting emphasis on keywords before he can even speak!

Imagine your child feeling hungry, {s}he has only one way to let you know that {s}he wants food. Usually via screaming or crying, right? But if your child could sign, even just “eat”, you would know what your baby needed! Simple. Learning sign language and signing with your child eliminates the guess work and minimizes frustration for both baby and parent – I can certainly attest to that!

Top 5 Signing Tips:

1. Play face to face {get down to their level}
2. Imitate
3. Label your baby’s experience {i.e. if your baby points to something, sign and say what it is}
4. Be consistent with your signing
5. Repeat, repeat, repeat

  1. We do love sign language – we all know the alphabet and a few of the main signs 🙂 Looks like a great book – never thought of chatting with the little ones this way – awesome!

  2. My son has a significant speech delay and we are in speech therapy learning sign language. This book would be very helpful in getting him to communicate more.

  3. This book would be great for my 2 yr old grandaughter. She is speech delayed and my daughter has been working with her by signing.

  4. I want to win to help me teach my child sign language. I believe that the earlier they can communicate with me, the less tantrums and frustration there will be.

  5. I would love to win this giveaway! We did some baby signs with my 3.5 year old son and it was such a great tool to help him communicate. My 14 month old son has tested on the low range of normal language development, so we have started signing with him in order to help his verbal development. This would be such a great tool for our family!

  6. This would be great for my niece and sister. An easier way to communicate and a well valued future skill for both of them.

  7. Id like to win because I teach my grandkids “eat” and “mommy” but I dont know the others. Its amazing how they pick it up and it lets you know they are thinking.

  8. So cute, my sister is due soon and I know she was talking about signing the little one when it’s time.

  9. Learned a little bit of sign language when I was younger, and I had a very easy time teaching my son some simple signs before he could talk. I’d love to learn more.

  10. My 12 year old daughter is deaf and I’m sure this book would help me learn how to communicate with her better. She knows thousands of signs, I unfortunately know very few compared to her. I find myself asking her to write down what she said because I’m not sure of very simple signs. I’ve thought about taking classes but there isn’t currently a class at my local college.

  11. I would love to win this for our baby boy. We are teaching his basics but we would love to expand our signing knowledge.

  12. Would love this for my daughter in law who just had baby#2 in July. She did sign language with our 1st grandson when he was little. it was awesome!
