The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Eating Clean

Preservatives – yuck!  Have you ever taken the time to look and see what kind of things lurk in our everyday foods?  It is not pretty.  I hate the idea of filling my body (and the bodies of my family members) with chemicals, and other things that our bodies really shouldn’t have. I was contacted to review The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Eating Clean (by Diane A. Welland, M.S., R.D.), and I have to say I was fascinated.  I learned so much reading this book – many things I was completely unaware of.

Eating clean combines three aspects of healthy eating: overall nutrition; emphasis on unprocessed foods; and healthy food preparation. This guide shows readers how to change their eating habits, without breaking their budgets or sacrificing taste. It provides a look at: how, what, and what not to eat; how to best prepare food; how to make quick, healthy meals; how to liven up nutritious foods; how to buy healthy on the cheap; and how to eat out.

I don’t even know where to begin – Idiot’s Guide to Eating Clean is packed full of  information, but it was an easy read.  The first section, ‘The ABC’s of Being Clean’, as the name suggests, tells everything about eating clean. It includes seven simple steps to eating clean, how you can start eating clean, super secrets for keeping clean.  After taking in all of this information, I was rather excited! I learned so much – not only about losing weight by clean eating, but about the health benefits as well. According to the book, eating clean will help maintain a healthy blood pressure, create better blood sugar levels, and even help the heart.  This makes perfect sense to me.  With the absence of many of the foods we ingest on a daily basis, the body is bound to be more healthy by making a few adjustments.

I was eager to get to the recipes in Eating Clean.  This is so handy for me, as I am always lost when it comes to finding good, healthy recipes that don’t contain the unwanted ‘bad” ingredients, chemicals, preservatives, etc.  The Idiot’s Guide to Eating Clean has some wonderful recipes!  I have tried one so far, but I cannot wait to try more. The recipes use simple substitutions that really sound good. It has some amazing soup recipes (which are so good for you, as they are filling!), as well as salads, main dishes, vegetables, snacks, desserts. There are also sections such as Meals in 30 Minutes or Less and  Two-in-One Meals.  I found this book to be a nice balance of making me understand eating clean, without overwhelming me.  About two-thirds of the book is recipes – perfect for jumping right in.  A few examples of the recipes included are Beef Satay on Rice Noodles (yum!), Hearty Onion Soup, Pork Tenderloin with Cherry Sauce, Green Beans with Caramelized Onions, Pecan Granola and many, many more. What I like about these recipes is that there are only a few simple modifications needed to make it “clean”. The Deviled Eggs recipes, for instance, substitutes low-fat sour cream and low-fat Greek yogurt for mayonnaise.

I have often wanted to try cooking more healthy, but sometimes get lost in the sea of information out there.  This book is easy to follow, speaks in everyday terms, and is a book that I will definitely be referring to time and time again. I am looking forward to making and keeping my family healthy!

  1. I am an avid nutrition label reader checking serving size, calories, fats, cholesterol, sodium content and fiber. I try to stay away from saturated fats and I try to eat high fiber.

  2. I check for the amount of sodium in a package if it isn't homemade and I also try not to use too much butter or other "fat" item to the meal. I will use Olive Oil and I will add herbs to add taste instead of salt.

  3. When shopping for foods, I try to choose items that are low in fat and salt and have as few preservatives as possible.

  4. I try to trim and drain away as much fat as possible, and try to always always include a vegetable or a green salad with dinner.

  5. Try to add fiber to foods to keep the system running correctly. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.
