The Fault in Our Stars
True love doesn’t judge…
I know this firsthand, as my husband has shown me this time and time again.
I was a single mother when I met my husband. My son’s father told me that no man would ever want me, since I had a kid (and he told me some other awful things too). My self-esteem was low, and I pretty much resigned myself to the fact that it would just be my son and I for possibly years to come.
When my son was 14 months old, a friend of mine who worked at the local police department said she wanted to introduce me to one of the officers who she felt would be perfect for me. We had the same interests and he just seemed like my “type”. I was excited, but not too hopeful, as I didn’t want to get hurt.
My friend arranged for us to meet at the police department. He seemed like a really nice guy, and we planned to go out that Saturday night after work. We went to a local restaurant and sat talking for hours. I really liked him – he was courteous and very sweet. My heart was a little heavy though, as I knew I would have to tell him about my son. I was unsure how he would react. I decided that I needed to let him know immediately, because if it was an issue, we could both walk away before the feelings were too intense.
I asked him if he likes kids and he said, “yes, but I don’t really know what to do with them”. I blurted out, “I have a 1-year old son”. His face didn’t change, and he calmly said, “Okay – just show me what I need to do!”. I might have fallen in love at that moment. Or I might have fallen for him on our second date – the next day (which happened to be Mother’s Day). He picked me up for a motorcycle ride and had a dozen red roses tucked inside his jacket. Roses for me, because I was a mother.
Could this man really be so sweet? Absolutely, and he has been for the 23 years we have been together. He does so many sweet and thoughtful things – each one making my heart overflow with love, just like on that second date.
The Fault in Our Stars movie reminds me a bit about my own relationship. Although I wasn’t sick (thank goodness!), the message is similar.
True love doesn’t judge.
The Fault in Our Stars:
Hazel and Gus are two extraordinary teenagers who share an acerbic wit, a disdain for the conventional, and a love that sweeps them — and us – on an unforgettable journey. Their relationship is all the more miraculous, given that they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, based upon the number-one bestselling novel by John Green, explores the funny, thrilling and tragic business of being alive and in love.
The Fault in Our Stars has a wonderful cast – Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Willem Dafoe, Nat Wolff, Sam Trammell, Mike Birbiglia, and Emily Peachey.
The film was directed by Josh Boone.
I desperately want to see The Fault in Our Stars, and cannot wait for it to arrive in theaters on Friday, June 6th (that’s tomorrow!). It doesn’t seem like a heartbreaking movie, but more inspiring and feel good.
