Celebrate 60 Years of Children’s Entertainment with The Jim Henson Company

Disclosure review
When you hear the name “Jim Henson,” what is the first thing that you think of?  For me, I am taken back to my childhood and some of my favorite television shows and characters, including the Muppets, the Fraggles, Emmet Otter, and a whole bunch of Sesame Street characters.  I remember spending many hours in front of the television watching Fraggle Rock, the Muppet Babies, and other shows that my parents did not mind me watching because they were not only entertaining, but educational as well.  Jim Henson’s characters and stories are timeless, and I still love seeing them now, even as an adult.

On September 24, The Jim Henson Company is celebrating sixty years of providing children’s entertainment.  Can you believe that – sixty years???  That goes back to when my parents were children, and The Jim Henson Company is still around and still coming out with new shows, movies, and characters for my children to enjoy, as well as the old classics!

I received a fun gift basket full of goodies from The Jim Henson Company to help celebrate its sixtieth anniversary.  The gift basket contained four DVDs, including “Doozers: Spookypalooza,” “Dinosaur Train: Buddy’s Halloween Adventure,” “Sid the Science Kid: Sid’s Spooky Halloween,” and “Pajanimals: Spooky Costumes.”  There were also two Doozer Ready-to-Read paperback books (“Doozers Catch a Ride” and “Doozers Stick With It”), and the “Enchanted Sisters: Spring’s Sparkle Sleepover” book!

My daughters love watching DVDs, so they were super excited to get four new DVDs.  I had never personally watched any of those shows before, but my oldest daughter recognized them from watching them at her day care.  We planned a “girls night in” where we could lay out some pillows, eat some snacks, and enjoy our new DVDs.

I loved how all of the DVDs had a Halloween theme – perfect for this time of year!  We started off with the “Doozers: Spookypalooza” DVD.  Spookypalooza is a holiday for scaring each other in a fun way, and there is a contest to make the spookiest pumpkin.  The Pod Squad wants to make a Haunted Doozer using three pumpkins.  However, they have to  use science to figure out how to build their Haunted Doozer!  There are also four more Doozer episodes included on this DVD.

We then moved on to the “Dinosaur Train: Buddy’s Halloween Adventure,” which includes four short adventures of the Pteranodon family.  In the first adventure, they take a ride on a night train on a spooky night and take part in a spooky scavenger hunt using their senses.  In the next adventure, they find a fossil tooth and investigate where it came from with the help of the Dinosaur Train Conductor.  Then they make a spooky visit to a haunted roundhouse for a fun party.  Finally, they celebrate gourd season and the autumn moon/equinox, learn about gourds, and see a special full autumn moon.

Our next DVD was “Sid the Science Kid: Sid’s Spooky Halloween.”  Sid wants to know who will have scary spooky costumes for the Halloween party.  All of the kids’ costumes are scary – bat, spider, skeleton, and black cat.  They learn about how bats eat mosquitoes and help flowers and trees grow, how spiders build webs, amazing things that cats can do, and the importance of skeletons in our bodies.  They also make ooey, gooey green slime!

We ended with the “Pajanimals: Spooky Costumes” DVD.  In this story, Cowbella is concerned about trick or treating because of the scary monsters, including skeletons, werewolves, and ghosts.  She takes a trip to Storybook Land and learns that everyone gets scared sometimes, that the scary monsters are just kids in costume, and that costumes are fun for dressing up!  This DVD also comes with four additional episodes.

We had a great girls night and really enjoyed our new DVDs.  There was fun music and singing throughout the shows.  Each episode was the perfect length for my daughters – long enough to tell an interesting story, but not too long so they lost interest.  And of course, I loved how there was a lot of educational elements to each story, so my daughters were learning while enjoying a good story.

books
Books are always a hit in my house as well, and I think the Doozer books will be great for my daughters as they learn to read.  For right now, they both enjoyed having the stories read to them or looking at the fun illustrations.  In “Doozers Catch a Ride,” the Pod Squad is having a race to the four corners of Doozer Creek, but Molly Bolt needs her own special unique vehicle.  “Doozers Stick With It” involves a super sticky and slippery problem when the Pod Squad helps build a new playground.

Finally, the Enchanted Sisters book series is about four sisters (Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer) who are responsible for the change in seasons.  In “Enchanted Sisters: Spring’s Sparkle Sleepover,” it is the last day of winter, which means it is time for Winter’s Snowflake Slumber Party.  Spring is finally old enough to join her sisters at the sleepover, but she is nervous about it.  Things get worse for her when she has to take charge and lead her sisters (as well as the Weeds, a group of misfit boys) to save the Seasons Ceremony so that winter can end and spring can begin.  We all really enjoyed this book.  It was fairly long, so it took us longer to get through it, but we are now looking forward to reading the other adventures of the Enchanted Sisters.  And The Jim Henson Company is currently working on a television series based on the Enchanted Sisters, which is really exciting and I am sure will be a favorite of my daughters!

  1. Sesame Street is just classic, as much as I love his other projects, it all comes back to Sesame Street. I am loving sharing old & new episodes with my toddler on Netflix. Sunny days…. 🙂

  2. My favorite show was always the Muppets. I don’t care for the new one though. I don’t find it very funny.
