Three things you should organise as soon as you know you are moving

Moving home is an exciting moment, but it’s also a little stressful. When moving, there is a lot to think about, which can sometimes feel a little overwhelming. But the sooner you start planning and putting things into motion, the less stressful certain things will be – we wish we could take away all the stress, but unfortunately, that’s not possible.

The key to a successful move is organisation. By planning ahead and tackling important tasks as soon as you know you’re moving, you can reduce stress and avoid last-minute problems. For example, you can book in a removalists in advance, as well as start removing a lot of the clutter that you have collected in your current home, over the years.

Below we have put together a brief guide on three things you should organise as soon as you know you are moving.

Book a removals company

One of the first things you should do is secure a reliable removal company. The best movers often get booked up weeks or even months in advance, particularly during busy periods such as summer and school holidays. The sooner you book the better the price that you will get offered, as often a lot of them have advanced rates then the price goes up the nearer to the day you book.

Start to declutter your home

Moving presents the perfect opportunity to reassess what you own. Instead of moving everything and essentially moving all your clutter from one home to the other, take the time to go through your belongings and decide what you really need. Over the years, it’s easy to accumulate items that are no longer used or needed. The best thing to do is ask a friend to help as they will be more ruthless than you and will help you to be more strict about what to keep or not.

Budget for any changes to the property

Whether you’re moving into a rented property or a home you’ve purchased, there are often changes you’ll want to make once you move in. These could be anything from repainting walls and replacing flooring to updating furniture or carrying out larger renovation projects (some of these are more based if you are buying).

The best thing to do is create a spreadsheet and put all the costs together that you expect. By creating a budget before moving day, you’ll have a clearer idea of what you can realistically afford and can prioritise the most important improvements first. What can also be useful is getting quotes from the people you think you will need, this way you can start getting the process rolling and know what to start with once you are moved in. Try to factor in the garden when making changes.

When are you moving and when you move are you moving to a rented or bought property? What are the first couple of things you are going to do when you move? Is there anything missing in our guide that you think needs adding? Let us know in the comment box below. We look forward to hearing from you.
