Malone is almost 9 and starting to really enter the big kid years. I’m not going to lie, I love the big kid years… I love seeing him gain more independence and start to really soar. But we’ve encountered a really big problem! How do we make sure that he’s safe, learning independence and not give him his own smartphone? There are times when I feel like I’m the only mom in America NOT giving their tween a smartphone, but I’m okay with that. He doesn’t need the internet at his fingertips, he doesn’t need access to tons of app, texting with people we don’t know or the ability to call everyone. He WANTS a smart phone, but what he NEEDS is a way to get in touch with us and a way for us to get in touch with him.
He NEEDS a little bit of independence and the ability to learn how to be responsible. Especially since we love going to Six Flags. His favorite ride is a roller coaster that’s right next to his little sister’s favorite ride. From a maturity point of view, he is ready and capable of waiting in line at his ride by himself, going on the ride and meeting back up with his sister. He’s earned that right by proving himself trustworthy in other situations.
But this mama NEEDS to know where he really is and to be able to get a hold of him.
Which is why we’re really LOVING the TickTalk 2.0 wrist phone with locator.
The TickTalk 2.0 is a wearable phone for kids that also has a GPS. It uses the same data networks that our cell phones use and Malone is able to make and receive calls with just a quick click of a button. You can store up to 13 contacts, there’s no need for him to have to remember a phone number.
The TickTalk 2.0 comes with a SIM card and plans start as low as $5.00 a month for voice, data and text message. When we set up the data plan, he was given his own phone number (which makes him feel super cool)!
One of the things that my husband and I really loved about this phone is the increased function that using the App brings. The App is available on both iOS and Android. Upon downloading the app, it walks you through steps to get the wrist phone set up. My husband loved this because he’s allergic to paper directions/manuals.
In the app we can:
- Set up a list of tasks for him to complete
- Send voicemail
- See the history of where he’s been
- Send text messages
The GPS feature on the TickTalk 2.0 is a great added feature for our family and gives me a peace of mind, especially when we’re at crowded events or going somewhere that he’s going to be separated from us (like Six Flags). He’s a kid who has proven to be of great character and we trust him 100%. But he knows this phone has GPS on it for safety reasons and that has helped him grow a little bit more independent from us “in case the bad guys get me, you’ll know where I am.” To the “bad guys” eye, the watch could very easily be mistaken for a toy. The icons are very general in appearance.
The value of this product far outweighs the price. It’s priced at $129.99 and available for purchase on the TickTalk website.

This would allow parents to ease their child into technology; this would allow kids to gain trust and confidence before jumping into that social networking pool!

I love this for my son. He’s been begging for a phone but I don’t think he’s ready for a mobile.
Where to start…the GPS is a great feature, but I really like that it has inexpensive plans.

This would be a great way to give a younger child a phone that would look ‘cool’ to them (if that is even still an appropriate ‘in’ word), but limit the chances of misuse that are inherent in an internet connected phone.
I like that it teaches responiablity for the kids
I love the GPS! What a great idea!
I’m excited that this seems to be perfect for my younger kids!
A little bit more peace of mind!
I really like the fact that it is wearable.

I like that it is a good beginning in giving some independence to younger kids, but feeling safe about it.
I would be excited to see how my littles use it. They are so tech savvy already. It’s fun to see them know how to open up my phone and find the games or youtube.
The feature i’m most excited about is the GPS! I’ve been looking into something wearable for my little girl, but all the ones that they have through my cell service have bad reviews especially considering their cost! This one has definitely got me interested!
This would be great to introduce the kids to technology. I especially like the GPS.
I really like the The GPS feature that would be a mind easer
I love the GPS feature on it! Definitely would be a good way to introduce my daughter to some independence!
Our daughter plays with other girls in the community on the other end and we had to walk/driver there every now and then to check if they are doing okay. BUT now with tick talk 2.0, we have such a piece of mind we can just call her OR she can call us, we can aslo track her on the map to make sure she hasn’t gone somewhere else. It’s just piece of mind for us, we are VERY Happy!!
This is pretty good for a phone watch compared to other products. very easy to set up and the plans for them weren’t expensive. It was easy for my daughter use the watch. The monthly payment is $5.00 with SpeedTalk.
