Summer is here – it’s finally here! Families everywhere are gearing up for some serious summer fun (and good eats, of course!). We have several plans, including going to the beach and hosting several BBQ’s with our family and closest friends. What does it take to host the perfect BBQ? For us, there are several must-haves/dos for hosting a great outdoor party.

Tips for throwing the perfect summer BBQ

1. Prepare as much food as you can ahead of time. This is something I always do, as I do not like to be stuck in the kitchen prepping and cooking while others are out enjoying the great outdoors. If I am making a fruit salad, for instance, I will cut up the fruit a couple of hours before the party, and clean it up as I go. I also chop any veggies that will be used on our burgers. I gather all of the items my husband will need for the barbecue (salt, pepper, serving tray, etc.), so I am not running in and out of the house constantly while trying to have a conversation with my guests.

2. Ask others to bring a dish. I am always happy to bring something when we are invited to someone’s house, mostly because I know how helpful it is. In fact, last night we were at a BBQ at a friend’s house and everybody brought a dish. The hosts only had to BBQ the meat. It was PERFECT, and my friend who was hosting was so glad she did it this way.

3. Use a cooler. As you can probably tell, not only do I like to keep myself out of the kitchen, I try to keep others out as well. It’s nothing personal, but it’s just simpler that way. We always place a couple of coolers in the backyard – one for “adult beverages” and one for kids drinks. Everyone can help themselves and not have to grab drinks from the refrigerator. It also helps, as I need my precious refrigerator space for the food!

4. Compose a music playlist a couple of days before. What BBQ is complete without some awesome tunes? I try to include a nice variety of music (depending on my guests), in my long playlist. Right before the party starts, I plug my phone into a portable speaker and let it play throughout the party. It is also fun to listen to music while setting up for the party!

5. Make sure you have enough seats. A day or so before your party, go ahead and set up your yard. We like to make several conversation areas, so guests can mix and mingle as they like. If you need to borrow or rent chairs, do that. We like our guests to be comfortable and ideally have enough seats for everyone.

6. The more finger foods, the better! If you can get away with meals that folks can eat with their fingers, it is always a great idea to do so. This is especially helpful with appetizers and desserts.

We usually serve a lot of food – hot dogs, hamburgers, steaks, salads, appetizers and of course some yummy desserts. The problem with cakes and pies though, is that they can be messy to serve. Although they are tasty, they are pretty messy. And you have to take time away from friends to cut them. I would rather not, thank you very much! I am big on quick and easy when it comes to entertaining. I have found the perfect treat for summertime BBQs.
