Unlikely Friendships for Kids Review and Giveaway

unlikely friendships

Jennifer Holland started writing about Unlikely Friendships after she went scuba diving and encountered a Puffer Fish swimming with a school of Sweetlips. The next day when Jennifer returned to the reef the Puffer Fish was still swimming with the Sweetlips. She found it interesting that even though they do not usually swim together they were. That is what started a search for stories about other animals who became friends with animals that were very different from them.

My oldest daughter shares the same love of books that I do. She was excited when I told her about the books we would soon be receiving, Unlikely Friendships for Kids by Jennifer S. Holland. Last year Jennifer wrote a review of Unlikely Friendships with heartwarming stories of how any animal can be friends and these 3 books contain the same great stories but for young readers.

My 6 year old had no problems with the wording and the sentences are short and font is a larger size. Each book tells 5 stories about animals of different species becoming friends. My personal favorite was the story of the leopard who came into a small Indian village each night for 60 nights to sleep and cuddle next to a cow. Amazing. A predator sleeping next to what normally is it’s prey. The real life photography throughout the stories help lend a visual aid to the child reading it. The generous amount of images also make it a great book to read to younger children. I also read the stories to both my 5 year old and 3 year old and both enjoy them.

Towards the back of the books are Animal Lists with black silhouetted pictures of each animal and a brief description and where the animal lives. At the end of each book is a Word and Phrase List with the definitions of harder words throughout the books. I find this especially helpful with young readers and it gives them a sense of independence to not have to ask a parent each time they get stuck on a word or wonder about an animal they read about.

I encourage my kids to read everyday, especially in the summer, and Unlikely Friendships for Kids has already become a favorite. Each book retails for $7.95 and I will mention they are very nice hardback books. They would be a wonderful addition to any library!
