What are Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns are made from ceramic or porcelain. It is made into a cap and it is then placed and fitted in an existing tooth. Dental crowns are known as one of the durable and long-lasting treatments. You will be able to enjoy its benefits for a long time unlike other temporary options for fractured teeth.
Why Do I Need a Crown?
One of the main reasons why you need to get a crown is for the protection of a fractured or weak tooth. It can also act as a covering for a poorly shaped tooth. For some, they get it to deal with discolored teeth. If your tooth needs filling replacement, this can also work well for you.
When is a Crown Needed?
Weak Teeth
There are different reasons why the enamel of the teeth weakens. It can be because of a specific illness or it can also be genetic. It is also a result of poor oral hygiene. Having this problem may mean you need the protection a dental crown can provide.
Worn-down Teeth
As time passes by, your teeth can also be worn-down. Acid from the beverages you drink can wear down your teeth. It can also be because of the food you have eaten. This is why brushing and cleaning teeth regularly matter to avoid this problem.
Large Fillings
It has to be noted that when the filling of the tooth widens, it also loses its integrity. Having large fillings can lead to the destabilization of the teeth. Even the act of chewing can cause a tooth to break and crack leading to the need to treat it.
Tooth Discoloration
There are different factors that can lead to tooth discoloration. It can be because of smoking or it can also be caused by the beverages you are drinking. Whatever it is that causes it, it can be a bit of a problem. If you want to have naturally white teeth again, dental crowns are the perfect solution.
Cracked Teeth
Having cracked teeth can cause a lot of problems. First, it steals away your confidence to smile. Aside from that, it can also cause some problems in eating. If you want to get rid of this problem, you can consider dental crowns as the perfect solution. However, if the damage is too severe, your dentist may suggest getting dental implants in Naples to replace the tooth altogether.
Complications of Having a Dental Crown
Aside from the benefits, you can get when you consider dental crowns, you have to be aware of some complications. Here are some of the side effects you should be aware of:
Teeth Sensitivity
The crowned tooth may become sensitive to heat and cold. But this is not something permanent. After a few days the tooth will get used to the crown.
Chipped Crown
You have to be careful when you are already wearing crowns. This is because there are some types of crowns that are vulnerable to chipping. This is common among porcelain crowns.
Allergic Reaction
Although rare, the metal used in some crowns can cause an allergic reaction for some people.
Gum Disease
In some cases, people experience soreness or irritation in the gum area around the crown. You may develop gingivitis or other gum diseases.
How Are Dental Crowns Installed?
First, the outer layer of your tooth will be filed down and some parts of it will be removed. After the trimming process, an impression will then be made not only on the filed teeth, but also on the other teeth surrounding them. After that, a temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth as the impression will be sent to the lab. The crown will then be made. Once made, the crown will be attached with a special dental glue or dental cement.
How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?
Some crowns are sturdier and last longer than others. Typically, a crown may last between 5 and 15 years. If you are looking for longer lasting crowns, ask your provider or Horsforth Smile Clinic about gold crowns or crowns made from porcelain-fused-to-metal.
Bottom Line
There will always be some considerations in choosing the best treatment for your teeth. By carefully examining all factors, you will be able to know if dental crowns are good for you.

Wow, it’s great to know that ceramic tooth crowns can actually last for more than a decade. I’d like to know more about that because I might need it someday. One of my teeth recently got chipped and I’m just waiting for it to not hurt too much anymore before consulting a dentist on what to do with it.
Tooth crowns are permanent and fixed prosthetic solutions. They are not removable like dentures. They are cemented on the natural teeth and may be removed only by the dentist if situations call for such.
