First things first, here’s a bit about the book and the author:

ABOUT THE BOOK

Bored with life at the zoo, an adventurous walrus escapes to the outside world. With the zookeeper in hot pursuit, Walrus cleverly tries on all sorts of hats to disguise himself. Will a yellow hardhat point to a new life as a construction worker? Or will a red swimming cap reveal his true talents? Follow the happy-go-lucky runaway as he hides amongst firefighters, businessmen, and even high-stepping dancers in this delightful wordless picture book.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stephen Savage is the illustrator of the acclaimed New York Times bestselling picture book Polar Bear Night. His editorial illustrations have appeared in dozens of major newspapers and magazines including the New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic and The Wall Street Journal. When Stephen is not on the run, he lives in Brooklyn, New York, with his wife and daughter.

Now…the good stuff…is the book any good?

Where's Walrus picture book

Where’s Walrus is one of Evan’s (3/2 years old) favorite books and we’ve only had it a short time.  Every time we read it, we get to the end and he immediately says “Again!”

The illustrations are colorful, bright and very engaging.  I wondered how Evan would like a book that didn’t have any words.  I shouldn’t have worried!  On each page I say “And then?” and he fills in the story.  It’s a bit different every time we read it.  One time we will focus on what the walrus is doing, what hat he is wearing, etc and the next time we’ll focus on what the zookeeper is thinking or doing. Without words to “fence in” the story, it allows a child’s imagination to shine through.

Where’s Walrus would be a great book to give as a baby present.  The bright illustrations will engage the youngest child (though don’t let them near the pages!) while the imagination aspect of the book will insure Where’s Walrus will be a favorite for many years.

  8. I ‘boosted’ this giveaway. Is ‘boosted’ the same as ‘vote-up?’ I guess I should say I ‘voted-up’ this giveaway because I did NOT see a ‘boost’ giveaway, so I ‘voted-up’ this giveaway instead on 3/6/11.
