I love pie. Whether it’s apple, pumpkin, blueberry or lemon meringue, pie is always a favorite in our household. Unfortunately, with my busy schedule, just getting dinner on the table can be a struggle, let alone making a homemade dessert. It’s times like this when shortcuts come in handy, but let’s face it–when it comes to pie, the canned fillings and boxed crust mixes often result in a sad dessert that no one really enjoys. And a lot of the frozen brands don’t fare much better!
Wholly Wholesome provides baked goods to both bakeries and consumers. Their products are made with natural and organic ingredients–no strange additives, artificial flavors or preservatives, just the same ingredients you’d use if you were baking at home. Wholly Wholesome products are also free of trans-fat and come in vegan varieties. I love that Wholly Wholesome is a brand that is committed to sustainability and social justice–it’s nice to know that my grocery money is going to support causes that I believe in.

I recently had the opportunity to try three frozen pies from Wholly Wholesome: apple, pumpkin, and peach. Having been disappointed with frozen pies in the past (so much so that I’ve refused to buy them since), I didn’t know what to expect from Wholly Wholesome. Would the fruit be mushy? Would the filling be too sweet? And would the crust be bland and gross? The answers to these questions are no, no, and NO! These pies truly did taste like ones that I would make myself. Okay, who am I kidding, these pies were better than ones that I’ve made. The peach pie was sweet and tasted like summer. The pumpkin pie was perfectly spiced. And the apple pie reminded me of the pie my family used to buy at the local apple orchard every fall when I was growing up.
One thing that I really hate about most pre-made pies (from bakeries, frozen, or canned pie filling) is that the taste is so sweet and cloying, it’s almost artificial. Wholly Wholesome lived up to its name because the pies were true to the flavor of the fruits they were made with. The fruit was tender, but not mushy. And the crust was delicious, which is definitely a rarity! Wholly Wholesome recommends basting the pies with a sugar wash before baking and I found that it made a wonderful difference in flavor, texture, and color. With a minimal amount of effort, you can have a better-than-homemade pie cooling on the countertop in under an hour. It doesn’t get any better than that!

In addition to their Bake At Home pies, Wholly Wholesome makes pre-made pie shells, pie crusts, cakes, cookies, and pocket breads. Connect with Wholly Wholesome on Facebook and Twitter.
