So there I was, minding my own business in the bathroom. With my cell phone. Dumb idea? Sure, but that’s just how I roll. I am fairly certain that I am not the only one who takes his/her cell phone into the restroom, right?

In case you do not know where I am going with this story, let me lay it out for you. I was getting ready to use the bathroom, with my phone in hand. As I pulled down my drawers, the phone slipped and landed smack dab in the middle of the toilet.

Oh snap!  What a horrible, horrible feeling!  I stood there staring at my phone for a moment (in serious disbelief), and finally took the plunge, reached in with my hand, and quickly fished out my beloved phone (dripping water everywhere as I did this).  I grabbed the hand-towel that was hanging on the rack and desperately started wiping my phone.  Actually I kind of cradled it in the towel first in hopes of absorbing most of the water.

I had read before about what you should and shouldn’t do if a phone is accidentally submerged in water, but in my panic stricken state, I forgot everything I had read.  I went with my gut feeling and just continued to dry my phone.  I took the rubber cover off and wiped thoroughly around the phone and inside the cover.  I blew as hard as I could into the ports, speaker, camera and any other nook or cranny I could find.  I waited about 15 minutes (I did remember this part – to let it dry completely before turning it on) and held my breath as I proceeded to turn my phone on.  It worked!! I was stunned and excited, as I was sure it was a goner.  I do think the protective rubber case played a huge part in protecting my phone. But what if I didn’t have that protection?

This is where Asurion comes in:

Had my phone not worked after this unfortunate incident, I would be up a creek (you know what kind), without a paddle.  I would be so mad at myself, and my husband wouldn’t have been thrilled either, as the original contract price of the phone typically is NOT what most users would have to pay to replace their phone.

Asurion is here to help!  In addition to having some fantastic cell phone tips on their website (such as putting your phone in a bowl of rice if it gets wet!), they can help if you find yourself in a situation such as mine above.  Or if you lose your phone.  Or if it is stolen.  Asurion has partnered with the top cell phone carriers in North America to to help you get a replacement phone to you quickly.  They make it hassle-free and you will quickly be back on track, with a new phone in hand.  Cell phone insurance is a really good idea, unless you like paying bundles of money for new phones.  I do not like to do that.

Do you have cell phone insurance? Have you heard of Asurion?

  1. The mishap was not ours but we paid for it.:) My just turned 13 son was at our neighbors and was spraying some kids in the pool, being a smart aleck. He was staying clear of the pool area there because he had FINALLY gotten his first phone and had it in his pocket. My neighbor, owner of the home is kind of a smart a$$ too, and after a couple of failed attempts to curb my son’s fun, pushed him in the pool. She had NO idea the phone was in his pocket. He was SO scared of telling us but the mom called and told us. We ended up getting him another of the same phone, and didn’t ask either of them to pay. It was just one of those things. BUT we told our son if it anything happened to his phone again that was not COMPLETELY accidental, he would have to go without. It’s been over 2 years and he is VERY careful with his phone. Then THIS spring break, Dad put my son’s phone in his pocket while fishing and then SAT on it. Cracked the screen and the display would not work anymore. SO, we had to pay for it again, as was not his fault at all. Kinda funny because with a huge family, this one is the only one with phone “mishaps”. Thanks for the giveaway~~

  2. I was walking to our pickup and felt a stone in my shoe…leaned against the tailgate and put my phone on the edge while I fixed my shoe and you guessed it,,left my phone on the tailgate while we drove away…bye bye phone!

  3. I dropped my phone on the concrete as I was getting out of my car one time. I was so scared that my phone was broken, but luckily it still worked with only a few scratches!

  4. Yes, I have MOST definitely dropped my phone into the toilet! My phone goes everywhere with me, including the bathroom, it’s bound to happen. Thankfully it fell into clean water and afterwards I was able to get it working again!

  5. Once I could not find my phone for the life of me and no one was home (not even a neighbor) where I could call my # to see if I could hear it ringing somewhere. I was baffled because I knew ad just used itthe night before to set my alarm. Well….I ended up finding it buried in my Cat’s litter box when I went to clean it out later that afternoon!!! My cat had actually somehow even got it open and the battery was buried too!!!

  6. My brother had a phone chewed up by his (at that time) boxer pup. I think within a week, the dog chewed both his & his wife’s phones (her’s was brand new too).

  7. My son had his phone in his pocket. He had just filled the 5 gallon water dish for the animals, and was just about done, when his cell phone fell into the dish and got all wet.

  8. Hi! 🙂 Well, I luckily haven’t had any… and that better continue… 🙂 There were times that I dropped my PDA years ago, but short distances, but didn’t know until I picked it up that it was okay. Now they have cases that are a vast improvement over the plastic ones that you don’t need to worry about those short distances. And my first cell phone I used until it died all by itself… so, been fortunate… *knocking all the wood I can find*

  13. I have about 10 stories so I will just share my most recent. Yes, I am a mobile mishapper as well as a GPS ruiner and an ipod drencher. My latest story is keeping it in the front pocket, my baby spitting up on me and I immediately threw the pants in the washer with the phone in the front pocket. No- it doesn’t work after going through a whole wash cycle.

  14. You know the commercial that they use to show that had the picture of the spider on it and scared everyone. Well my daughter had her phone with her at a friend’s house and there really was a spider on my daughter’s phone. My daughter’s friend threw the phone and her screen was smashed.

  21. With my husband’s last phone, I ran it through the washer and dryer within two weeks of purchase. That was an expensive one to replace.

  22. This is the most interesting story I have: My old LG phone was a P.O.S. and it had been glitching horribly the night I was using it. I wasn’t in a patient mood and I got so enraged (Lyme rage plus lack of sleep) that I actually BIT my phone. Cracked the internal screen and couldn’t read text messages unless I slid the phone open. LOL

Thank you for this great giveaway!

  23. I dropped mine in the swimming pool. I was sitting on the ladder, looking at messages (how dumb was that) and yep, dropped it in the pool. Luckily my friend who was in the pool was standing there talking to me and grabbed it like seconds after it fell in. I also had the rubber case and she had me put it in a bag of rice 24 hours before trying to turn it on and I got really lucky that it worked the next day. I am alot more careful now..lol

  24. The worst phone mishap we have had was my daughter – she got a new phone – and held her arm out over the deck (3 stories up) – well – one of the dogs jumped on her and oops …. well … Asurion made it a whole lot cheaper than buying a brand new droid 2 days in a row – LOL

  31. My husband’s bloodhound “puppy” used my 1 week old phone as a chew toy (and my hubby’s prescrption glasses, the TV remote, broke 5 fruit trees in half…)

  32. I left my phone in my pants pocket and then washed the pants. I didn’t realize until I heard it clunking around in the dryer. My husband lost his in the woods and in a snow bank before.

  33. Last summer I lost my cell phone, so I ended up upgrading to an iPhone. Of course, I found the old phone just a few weeks later. Thanks for the chance to win!

  48. We (hubby, kiddos and I) were window shopping for an in-ground pool. I was yelling at the kiddos to stay away from the edge, as it was slippery and they may fall in. Low and behold, I should’ve taken my own advice, because I did just that-purse, cell phone, keys….everything went swimming with me. We have Asurion on our cell phones, thank goodness, because I had just gotten a new one a few days earlier!

  49. This year alone we have had one lost cell phone, two broken iphone screens, one water damaged iphone, and oen non-smart phone that had a worn out keypad. It’s beyond rediculous!

She had it in her back pocket as she was thrown in the nadatorium pool lol.

  51. First my phone fell on the tile phone and the screen cracked. I thought I could live like that for a few months until my contract was up and I could buy a new one. But then a few days later, my husband dropped my phone in the pool. Forced me to get a new one.

    Thanks!

  52. I have not had a mobile mishap yet, but my son went swimming with his Blackberry and that was the end of it.

  56. One mishap that happened a looooooooong time ago was when I got water on my phone the night before, and took it apart to let it dry. The next morning, when I woke up and put it back together, I got the “White Screen of Death”. I had over 20 numbers in that phone and couldn’t remember a single one (except my parent’s and sister’s numbers). I was so upset.

  57. I am happy that your cell phone is still working. I am always paranoid that something like that will happen to me so I am obsessively careful!

  58. Oh no, what an awful feeling! I haven’t dropped mine in the toilet (yet), but it could so easily happen to any of us. I did drop a book in the toilet at the doctor’s office – had brought it to read in the waiting room. No, those big, round plastic toilet paper dispensers were not made to be bookshelves! 🙂 I dropped my phone in the garage but, thankfully, only chipped it.

I was glad for once that it was not one of those self- flushing auto toilets… um.. YES I fished it out. (gulp) I washed and washed my hand and that phone and IT WORKED after it dried out very thoroughly. I was surprised.

  71. My phone dropped right next to the toliet, I thought for sure it was going in, I was so lucky
    flychild7(at)gmail(dot)com

  82. I was getting in the car after shopping at Walmart. I was trying to lean it against my shoulder as I was talking. I thought to myself “I better stop, I”m going to drop it.” Then a few seconds later that’s exactly what happened! The screen on my iPhone shattered. I was so sad 🙁

  83. Oddly enough, I have never actually broken a phone. I have dropped mine countless times but it has never broken. Thank goodness for cases, huh?

  84. My phone fell out of my purse and got stepped on at the airport. Unfortunately this happened as I was going out of town and not as I was coming home. I could not do anything about my cell phone situation for two weeks as the bill was not in my name.

Going into the bedroom, I happily grabbed the sheets off our king sized bed and tossed them in the washer. Then, about half an hour later I realized that my phone was missing. I searched high and low, and finally found it when I moved the sheets from the washer to the dryer. A wet phone can sometimes be recovered, but not one that has been swished around in the washer for half an hour. It was a very sad day. But then my husband surprised me with a new droid!

  88. I had my cell phone in my pocket when I went to the bathroom when I pulled my shorts up, plop the phone went into the toilet,

  106. I absolutely hate Asurion cell phone insurance they are the dumbest rudest most inconsiderate people I’ve ever had the displeasure of dealing with I sent in my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 that was improperly refurbished in the first place do to a American Battery in a international device after sending in my Note 5 I received an S6 which is obvious downgrade a smaller screen which I didn’t want the first place not to mention that it does not work with my service that I am leasing with the phone itself which I didn’t think was a friggin possibility makes me almost 3 weeks to get through to them send me another phone after heavily stressing upon the importance of sending me to correct phone they send me another phone that’s incompatible with my service at this point I’m extremely frustrated I spent almost 70 hours on the phone total Guild with at least 50 different people after being cold I’d be called back after five days three times in a row I finally got through again to have them assure me that they were going to send the right phone this next time third time’s a charm lo and behold I get the third phone the third wrong phone and it does not work with my service either they have to be absolutely just brainless. I hope they all lose their jobs because their absolute idiots I can’t stress that enough I don’t know where or how they got their Better Business Bureau rating because they’re absolute trash they should be shut down for what they’re putting on people and doing the people this is disgusting what people can get away with because they put it in their and conditions. Really though my message to Asurion would be “there’s a special place in hell for your kind of people”
And my message to people about Asurion would be stay away if you can avoid being involved with them and any possible way do do not give these people a dime of your money they’ll take you for anything and everything you got with a smile on their face while they do it.
