We live in a generation where children can learn from all different forms of media. Each of these seems to help them learn in their own way. ABC Mouse has become an extremely popular education website for kids. It doesn’t stop there, though. They have workbooks and reading books too. ABC Mouse has over 5,000 individual learning activities and more than 500 complete lessons with six learning levels.
We had some of the ABC Mouse workbooks and were talking about signing up for ABCMouse.com when I received a collection of ABC Mouse books, backpack, and subscription for review. I already knew that ABC Mouse was a useful and necessary tool because my daughter used it in her classroom all through kindergarten and we could see the strides she was making.
My children were thrilled to hear that we were going to sign up for ABC Mouse and they were ridiculously excited when they saw the adorable backpack that came with our gift pack. My husband opened the package and even he said, “Wow, that is one cute mouse backpack!” It was filled with books that were perfect for beginner’s reading and my daughter is really enjoying the brain exercise reading stories like “The Boy Who Cried Wolf” and “Ham with Jam?” The stories are completely adorable and filled with key words that are essential in a child’s first couple of years of reading.
The ABC Mouse website is jam-packed with learning games and activities. I tested it out myself and while I most definitely got a feel for how fun the games are, there was no way to test out absolutely every game because there is a variation on each separate activity. You can do a puzzle but you choose which level puzzle you want, then you choose the contents, be it the letter ‘S’ or opposites. Each area has a different activity, each activity has its own variations, and they all focus on different things. A couple of areas even say that they are still in progress, which means that ABC Mouse is continuously adding on to the current model! I find that so impressive and exciting!
The activities allow you to earn tickets for “purchasing” other items in the game. You’re given a hamster and a fish and can “buy” other pets. The children can expand the shelters for their pets with tickets, getting more tubes for the hamster or coral for the fishies. They can feed and clean their pets which even in itself is a learning activity, a lesson in responsibility! You can check on your child’s ticket, activity, subject, and ToddlerTime progress at your leisure, which I love!
My girls are loving the music section of the songs that play on their own and include the lyrics. Actual puzzles don’t work well in our house, pieces get broken and lost, but they are loving the puzzles on ABC Mouse. The difficulty level changes the number of puzzle pieces and, of course, they are learning while they go. The coloring pages kept online makes it much less messy but I love that there are seemingly infinite pages of printables for every activity.
The main question I hear asked among those considering ABC Mouse is it worth it and I most definitely believe it is. The way that it has improved learning for my kids, who all learn differently from each other, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that it is a completely essential learning tool.
