American Girl Magazine: September/October Highlights

A new issue of American Girl Magazine arrived! I’m sure you can imagine how giddy Luv was carrying it back to our house after we checked the mail. She immediately got comfortable on the couch and started reading!

Here are Luv’s top two favorite features in this issue:

Apple Snacks:

Ah, apples. The quintessential autumn fruit – especially living in Washington state! There are several delicious and simple recipes for kids to make that celebrate apples.

Sticker Treat:

Using DIY foam stickers and a little imagination, kids can create some spooky {or sweet} looking pumpkins! I love that they are no-carve, so the pumpkins last even longer. I think we will take the stickers off after Halloween and add some foam sticker leaves!

And here is a feature I think all parents should read, as well…

Stand Up to a Bully:

As an aunt to teens, they have told me all about how malicious kids can be in school “nowadays”. Sadly they have experienced bullying firsthand. It is heartbreaking to know someone you love has had to endure being picked on relentlessly, threatened, and/or harassed. Yes, the bullying issues were dealt with and resolved, but the pain from bullying always leaves a mark. This section includes a flow chart so kids can arm themselves with a plan and know when to tell an adult {as hard is it may be}.

Luv’s thoughts as she read:

* I want to make the apple smoothie. I think it would be yummy. I would drink it with a straw – your glass straw Momma.
* I want to make the apple sandwiches because it looks yummy and it really doesn’t have glutens!
*The pumpkin I really like the best is the ghost one. I like the cat the most too.

  1. I didn’t realize American Girl had such positive messaging. I knew they’re popular, but never took the time to see what it’s all about. I’m glad they’re aiming to have a positive influence on today’s young girls.

  2. I have been thinking about subscribing to this magazine as a gift for my friend’s pre-teen daughter. I think from your review that it would be just about perfect for her age group!

  11. I really like that they have a nice magazine that isnt filled with filth for young girls. When my grandaughter is old enough to read it I will get it for her. Love their dolls too!

  12. Luv’s review really cuts to the chase ~ this is a really great magazine for young girls. So glad to see that it is chocked full actual articles and not a lot of fluff and ads that are not necessarily for their age group.

  13. I am not familiar with this magazine, but it sounds spot on for where my oldest (6) is in life. I especially like that they included a feature on standing up to a bully. We’ve been fortunate not to have much experience, but there have been occasional “mean girl” encounters. I think it’s very important for kids to know how to handle themselves in those situations.

  14. I think this magazine is good for girls as it teaches them what to do when they are bored. I can’t tell you how many times my daughter has said, “I am bored to the gourd.” I am still trying to understand that phrase. Another thing I noticed was that it is not making girls feel bad about themselves but rather teaches them acceptance of themselves by not showing “perfect” model girl. Kudos.

  15. I bet this is a magazine that all little girls would love to read. I loved reading magazines as a child (still do), so I’ll definitely have to check this one out, once my baby girl gets older.

  16. Standing up to a bully is a scary but necessary action. It was a problem for me as a kid and even as an adult now it still resonates.

  17. mmm…apples. Love using apples in recipes this time of the year! And articles on bullying are always helpful as well.

  18. This looks like so much fun! I used to love magazines when I was little- and getting something in the mail just for me was so exciting!

  19. I love this magazine! The bullying feature is excellent. You are exactly right; all parents should read it and discuss this with their kids.

  20. My niece loves the American Girl Dolls. I didnt know they had a magazine. Nice to see they also have an article about bullying in the issue. Its such an important issue for kids to deal with today.

  21. Aw.. your lo is so smart! I love how she said she wanted to try it because it didn’t have glutens! 🙂
