The holidays are almost here! Can you believe it?

Next week we will be welcoming back Hanukkah, and soon thereafter we will finally have reason to celebrate the fun that is Christmas! I truly cannot believe that the winter holiday season is already upon us and, quite frankly, I am not sure that I am entirely prepared for it to be here. Surely the days seem to drag on one by one. There is never enough time in the day to complete all of the tasks that need to be done but, in hindsight, those dragging days fly by all too quickly. Our children are growing up faster than ever and, if it were up to me, I think I would freeze time and postpone tomorrow for as long as possible. Can the year really be almost over? Already?

Alas, ‘tis true. Since I suppose that I must dance in beat to the tune that is time, I might as well make the best of it. Where the holidays are concerned, I’m sure that some added festiveness is called for as well. In our family, we do festive quite well. One of our favorite and family activities is cooking (and eating!) and the harsh weather of winter certainly provides us with the perfect opportunity to do just that. However, with so many folks overindulging during this time of year, we do try our best to make sure that we have all of the best goodies on hand. Whether we’re cooking, snacking, or even baking, we try to lean our habits toward the good-for-you side of things. In this day and age, that is surprisingly much easier said than done. Thankfully, CVS/pharmacy is here to help.

Now, I’m sure that many of you associate CVS/pharmacy with illnesses since it is often the go-to store for all of your middle of the night sick remedy needs. Surely, I made that same connection until I recently learned of how much they truly do have to offer. Did you know that they even carry their own line of exclusive good-for-you food products? For those of you that follow along here, you’ll probably remember that I recently shared with all of you news of the Gold Emblem Abound collection. And, yes, that is what I am talking about once more.

Now, back to the holidays…

During the holidays, my family enjoys spending time in the kitchen. With our radio playing holiday tunes and a mess of mixing bowls spread across the table and countertops, holiday baking is our thing. We’re not the ones that whip up beautiful creations to share with the entire neighborhood so don’t get your hopes up for any remarkable recipe ideas. Instead, we are the ones that throw together whatever concoction we can come up with and tend to cross our fingers hoping for the best. Surely, momma can cook but baking… I leave that up to the kids. We play. We use our imaginations. We incorporate learning. We have fun. If they want a cookie that mixes peanut butter, chocolate chips, berries, and candy, who am I to say no? Baking is where they can be the boss. They are the inventors and I follow their lead. Sometimes we end up tossing entire trays because, yes, the mixtures can get a little funky at times. Then there are the times when we come up with something amazing! For example, did you know that marshmallows, peanut butter, raisins, and chocolate candies really DO work well together? My two cents doesn’t come in where the recipe is concerned but, instead, where the ingredients come from. And that, well, that brings me back to the Gold Emblem Abound collection from CVS/pharmacy.

You see, while the collection in itself more so features an array of various snack products – popcorn, trail mix, chips, granola bars, etc. – many of these already good-for-you items can be broken down for inclusion within whatever holiday recipes you may have up your sleeve.

For example, the kids love to add almonds to just about any of their concoctions. While almonds are generally a healthy food on their own, to them, the bright green bag and logo of the Gold Emblem Abound brand almonds shows that they are healthy.

If you want to add a little bit of colorful chewiness to your creation, simply reach for a bag of the Gold Emblem Abound Organic Dried Cranberries. These go absolutely perfectly with our family apple crisp recipe. Toss a few of these on top for added decadence and pure deliciousness. It is a huge hit during the holidays and the kids love being able to create little “pictures” atop the dish.

Are you looking to add a little bit of a crunch to your dish? If so, the Rice Pop Clusters work wonderfully. The kids usually eat most of them before they ever make it into the mixing bowl but I’m going to chalk that up to the fact that they are just so easy to “pop” into your mouth! After all, I really can’t blame them. Those Blueberry Almond ones are incredibly tasty!

Of course, if you’re not the baking type you can always fall back on the CVS/pharmacy Gold Emblem Abound products themselves. I’ve already gotten hooked on their Oat Bran Cookies, especially the Apple Raisin option. They are ridiculously delicious and I absolutely love them! Best of all, I don’t feel guilty about eating that one extra! Who wants to share?
