Daddies and Kids Deserve Some Daddy & Company

Think back to when you first found out that you were expecting. Mom got all of the attention, right? “You’re glowing!” “Congratulations, you look great!” “How are you feeling?” “Can I get you anything?” “You sit down; I’ll take care of that.” I mean, surely, it is all done with good intentions and, heck, while carrying around a baby for nine months it’s rightfully deserved. However, Daddy is often overlooked. From the moment we find out, through the entire duration of the pregnancy, to the delivery room, and even the first nights at home, it’s almost always about “Mom and baby.” Now I’m not one to turn down a kind word when it comes my way but could we please share the love with daddies out there, too? As much as I loved the sweetness from others when expecting our own little ones, their daddy was by my side through it all and is in this whole parenthood thing just as much as I am. After holding our hair back through battles with morning sickness, making midnight runs for whatever we might be craving, and riding the emotional rollercoaster with us, they deserve some brownie points and a pat on the back, too. Thankfully, I’m not alone in that thought and there is even an awesome little company that not only shares this way of thinking but helps to put more focus on Daddy as well as Mom.

Daddy & Company by DaddyScrubs was started by Robert Nickell who, after having fathered his first four children more than twenty years ago, found out that he was going to be a father all over again in 2009. Knowing what childbirth is like from a man’s perspective – waiting long hours, comforting his wife, sleeplessness, and then some – he came up with the idea to at least provide these soon-to-be daddies with comfortable clothing. Something that started with simple “I’m the Daddy” medical scrubs for him soon led to a plethora of fun clothes and gear for fathers and kids everywhere.

Daddies are quite important in a child’s life and I am all for products that encourage their involvement. While most of our adventure time consists of family outings, there are surely the times when boys just want to be boys. Not only do they have a wonderful little sampling of fun storybooks, but they’ve managed to tie a father’s love into it, too.

What Daddy Bear Loves isn’t just an adorably sweet children’s book, it is the product of a loving father and his constant encouragement for his daughter. Previously, I mentioned that Robert Nickell started up this company but what I failed to tell you (until now) is that his own children are in on it as well (hence the “& Company”). This book was written by none other than Robert’s own daughter, Paige. As any good father would do, Robert cheered on Paige in all of her ventures including her writing. Alas, through years of encouragement, a published book hit the shelves. Paige’s story of “What Daddy Bear Loves” is a charming story of a father and child that love to go on adventures with one another. In the end, however, we find out that their love for one another and life together is the biggest adventure of them all.
