DIY Painted Flower Pots

February 15, 2019 by Jennifer 3 Comments

As many of you know, I absolutely love to paint. It started innocently enough, with me just kind of fooling around, but then it turned into something I really enjoy. I have painted plenty of scenes on canvas, and I recently started painting rocks (super addicting!), and I have also discovered DIY painted flower pots! Why not spiff up old, boring pots?

One other thing I have been doing is painting terra cotta pots. It’s not that I don’t like terra cotta, but when there is an abundance of them, it can get a little boring. I found these two 8″ pots {below} on sale, and immediately got to work when I got home!

I used regular Acrylic paint. I started with a base coat and I applied two coats. I painted the top rim with black paint, for a bit of contrast.

Next I outlined the roses with black paint and a skinny brush. These are incredibly easy to make – anyone can do it {seriously}. I painted on a piece of cardboard to show you how.

After I had outlined all of the roses on each post, I filled in each one with a different color. It doesn’t have to be perfect at this point, just filled in. I then highlighted each rose with a lighter version of the same color (or white works too).  When the paint had dried, I went back with my black paint and “cleaned” up the edges a bit.

I went back and forth with the black paint and the fill-in colors, until I was happy with the way they looked.

I added some simple green stems and that is it!

After the paint had dried thoroughly, I applied two coats of varnish.

what a neat craft! My daughter would love to do this as we have some terracotta pots we got at the dollar store here and have been looking for a way to add something to them in addition to the plants of course. I will be showing this to her and maybe that can be a project she will do over school vacation.
