DIY Windshield De-icer
Growing up in California, I never dreamed I would have to worry about frozen windshields. When we moved to Oregon a couple of years ago, I quickly discovered that frozen windshields are a real thing. I bought a scraper and when the first cold freeze of the season arrived, I tried to scrape the ice off of my windshield early one evening.. What I ended up scraping was my knuckles, as the ice wouldn’t budge. That is when I decided to make this DIY Windshield De-icer!
My daughter told me about an inexpensive way to get rid of the ice on my windshield, and it couldn’t be easier. I mean, sure, you can pick up some de-icer type stuff at the store, but it can get expensive (especially if you want to supply each car with a can or bottle). It just seems to silly to spend that much money on one container, when for the same amount of money, you can make quite a few bottles of it on your own.
Supplies:
~Rubbing Alcohol
~Water
~Large spray bottle
Rubbing alcohol is really inexpensive, and that’s what makes this whole concoction worth doing.
All you have to do is use 1 part rubbing alcohol to 3 parts water. So if you use 1 cup of rubbing alcohol, you’ll use 3 cups of water. You can even do bigger batches if you have several spray bottles to fill.
This DIY Windshield De-Icer is also handy to have when the windshield wipers are frozen to the window – another thing we didn’t have to deal with in California! I usually store a bottle in each car (in the trunk), so it is always there when needed.
It couldn’t be easier folks!
If you have cold winters with ice, frost and snow, I hope you will try this DIY Windshield De-Icer and let me know about your results please!

We don’t have this problem where we live.. it doesn’t really get cold often but I wish I had known about this a few years ago. Great hack!
I mostly keep my car in the garage, but this is a great thing to keep in my car for when I need it.
I hadn’t thought of doing something like this–great idea!
I like DIY products – thanks for the info.
We don’t usually get much ice, but it’s forecasted for tomorrow night. Thanks.
This is great, I can’t wait to try it. It’s been a cold one in NC!
Here too – BRRRR!
We did have some ice, but I stayed home with my car in the garage so didn’t need this.
We don’t have to worry about that just yet, but it’s good to know what to you to de-icer the windshield. I will definitely use this.
Wow, I never knew this, and I love DIY concoctions. It would be good, too, if you realize you are out of store bought de-icer, most people have the products on hand to use to get by in a pinch.
You can’t leave it in your car the alcohol rises to the top and the water freezes at the bottom
