Dyson, the Do-It-All Vacuum – DC65 Animal Review

Carpets, hardwood, tile, and laminate are all quite different when it comes to flooring options, but what do they all have in common? Anyone…? Well, for starters, cleaning any of them is never any fun.

Carpeting tends to hold onto dirt and allergens, hardwood collects dust in corners and scratches easily, tile – need I even mention the grout? – and laminate (much like hardwood and tile) is just plain difficult. Having just moved late last year, this is our first home that has featured all of the above and, unfortunately, it has been quite the task trying to work out a cleaning routine because of it. Add kids and pets into the mix and it’s almost a lost cause. After all, there are only twenty-four hours in a day and most of those are spent, well, living life. There must be something out there that can make this daunting task easier, right? I thought that I had been through them all, each to no avail, but the skies finally opened up and the cleaning gods whispered a not so little secret in my ear…

Dyson!

It’s no secret that Dyson is one of the leading names in the vacuum industry, but hardwood? …tile? …laminate? Can it really handle all of it? Yes! Believe it or not, the answer truly is, yes! A million times over – yes! Recently, I had the opportunity to put the good ol’ Dyson to the test. More specifically, the Dyson DC65 Animal.

“The DC65 Animal has been built to achieve the highest suction at the cleaner head, twice the suction as any other vacuum. With its self-adjusting cleaner head and re-engineered brushbar, bristles dig deeper into carpets to remove more dust and dirt, while providing superior performance on hard floors. The DC65 has remodeled cyclones and uses the latest Ball technology. There’s also a Tangle-free Turbine tool to remove dirt and hair from carpets and upholstery.”

As if they haven’t said it well enough themselves, to put it in simple terms, I love it! While I’ve surely had vacuums in the past that work wonderfully on carpeting, this is the first that truly does it all. For starters, there’s the carpet…

Most competitors’ upright vacuums have fixed settings for switching between different flooring types. Because of this, I cannot tell you how many times I’ve moved off of the carpet and onto the hardwood forgetting to switch the setting. Of course, if you’ve ever done this, you know that it doesn’t work all too well. Having the bigger gap between the cleaner head and the floor contributes to a loss of suction power and, more often than not, instead of sucking in dirt and grime, the mess gets blown around.

However, with the Dyson DC65 Animal and its capability to self-adjust to different floor types with ease, you will never lose suction regardless of where you are in your house or what floor you’re cleaning. Between that and its reconfigured brush bar, with Dyson, you’ll have outstanding performance everywhere!

Then, of course, there is the superb Ball Technology of Dyson.

Instead of the usual back and forth and working in a straight line with most vacuums, Dyson’s Ball Technology allows users to easily steer in any which way. The ball, pivoting on the spot, makes cleaning along edges, into awkward places, and around tight curves and furniture a breeze.

Speaking of furniture…

In addition to the Dyson DC65 Animal itself, the included Tangle-free Turbine tool is a little miracle worker. Between the little ones unintentionally tugging on and pulling out my own hair and the insane pet mess, the amount of hair that regularly collects on our furniture is gross to say the least. Add that to the fact that our pets have light fur and hubby’s work uniform is dark; yep, recipe for disaster right there. Thankfully, this attachment is absolutely perfect in this situation. It lacks a brush bad and, instead, uses counter-rotating heads with brushes to help clean up and remove hair (and dirt) from carpets and, yes, furniture. Without having a brush for hair to wrap around and get stuck on, the Tangle-free Turbine tool quickly cleans up the mess and releases it through the hose and directly into the bin.

Now, since I mentioned the bin, I must tell you about that, too! Before we get to the actual bin itself, let’s take a closer look at what is inside the bin.

This state of the art Radial Root Cyclone technology allows airflow to move effortlessly through the filter, better removing more of the dirt, dust, and allergens that we try so hard to rid our homes of.

“Conventional vacuums rely on bags to trap dust and dirt. But when you start to use some bagged machines, dust can clog the tiny holes in the bag. Some ordinary bagless vacuums work in a similar way. They use a central filter to trap the fine dust, which can clog too. Suction drops, leaving dust and dirt behind in your home.”

That then brings us back to the bin itself. As you dance around your house humming whichever song may be one your mind, you’ll see the bin steadily filling up with all of the gook and grime. The dust, the dirt, the pet hair; none of us want to touch it. No worries though, Dyson has this covered as well. Emptying the bin is as easy as pressing a button – literally! When it gets full, the clear ABS polycarbonate riot shield (no worries about sucking up any hard items, it won’t break!) will allow you to easily see that it needs to be emptied. Simply remove the entire bin from the vacuum, hold it over a trash can, push the brightly colored red button, and – voilà! – the dirt is released! No mess. No fuss.

As if all of that weren’t great enough, it still comes with the basic necessities such as the lengthy vacuum hose and the extendable attachment. I can reach the ceiling over the stairwell now!

There is even a bonus Dyson Soft dusting brush which is perfect for cleaning delicate areas such as lamp shades, fan blades, curtains, blinds, and more!

On top of that, can we talk about the cord for a second? It is thirty-five feet, people! 35!

I can plug it in once and clean just about everywhere without having to search for a new outlet! Awesome! I do wish that it had additional storage hooks for the Tangle-free Turbine and Dyson Soft dusting brush as opposed to having to store these separately but, aside from that, it is a rather amazing vacuum.

All in all, I absolutely love our new Dyson! One of my favorite features, in addition to those already mentioned, is that it gives you the ability to use the hose with or without the extendable arm. High or low, close or far, in plain sight or dust bunnies under the couch, and on any flooring type imaginable; Dyson does it all!
