Flip Flop White Wine

Flip Flop Wine review, white wine types

Mmmm wine. I enjoy a glass of wine some evenings as a way to unwind and/or reflect upon my day. Living in California, I have been wine tasting several times, and have tasted many wines in my day {yep – I’m old!}. I was recently contacted by a wine company that I was unfamiliar with, but the name and the labels really caught my attention – Flip Flop wines. Now I just had to try them.

With flipflop wines, we have embraced the movement toward individualistic expression, instead of manufacturing wines into some cookie-cutter style that’s all the rage. Our goal is to craft expressive, well-balanced wines that evoke just what the grapes inside intended, without being over-wrought or over-explained, and that can be enjoyed at any occasion.

I typically prefer white wine over red wine, so I was thrilled that I received two bottles of white wine.  It was actually good timing too, as my son just turned 21 and was anxious to sample these with me.  I thought it would be fun to get the thoughts of a “new” wine drinker as well.

First up is the Riesling

fruity white wines

Each of their wines has a little slide chart which helps you determine the taste of the wine. For instance, if you prefer sweet wines, then the Riesling might be the one for you! We tried the Riesling and loved the fresh and slightly fruity flavor. I could easily see myself sipping on this with a light dinner, and it is a wine that I would be proud to serve at a dinner party or gathering. Serve chilled and store away from direct sunlight.

Appellation: Washington

Tastes like: Medium-bodied, Riesling with peach, apricot and melon which lead to a satisfying, smooth finish

It is full of: Tropical notes and sweet aromas

Eat with: Tofu stir-fry, shredded pork tacos and sake sashimi

I personally preferred the Riesling over the Pinot Grigio, which is funny since I’m a California girl 🙂

Next we tried the Pinot Gregio

crisp white wine

This was my son’s favorite.  It is a little bolder than the Riesling, but still light enough to be enjoyed with a variety of foods. It had a ‘zip’ to it which is nice for those who love a little action in their wine, but I believe it’s still mild enough for most white wine lovers to enjoy. Serve chilled and store away from direct sunlight.

Appellation: California

Tastes like: Light-bodied, refreshing Pinot Grigio with tropical citrus, ripe pear and a zesty, clean finish.

It is full of: Balanced crisp acidity

Eat with: Bruschetta, spaghetti carbonara, eggplant parmesan or your favorite tacos

My brother is a big wine connoisseur and I wish I could have let him try these…I think he would have been pleased.  Unfortunately we polished off our bottles before I had a chance to really share.  That isn’t too much of a problem though, as Flip Flop wines are affordable {$7.00 a bottle}.  A good wine does not have to be expensive, as proven by Flip Flop wines.

David Georges is the vintner of Flip Flop wines, and I love his passion for his wines!  It was fun to learn about him, especially since I am familiar with the areas in California he has lived/worked in.

While working at an organic vegetable farm in the Mt. Shasta region of California, David discovered the art of grape growing. After planting a small vineyard on the farm, he was fascinated with wine, from managing the vineyard to tasting the fruits of his labor. Inspired to learn more, David attended the University of California at Davis first to study viticulture, and then added  winemaking coursework as well. David honed his winemaking skills at well-known California wineries including Artesa and Davis Bynum.

In 2009, David began working on the wines that would become the inaugural vintage of flipflop. His goal is to stay true to each wine’s varietal character, and to make great tasting wines that don’t break the bank.

I love everything about Flip Flop wines, and am so happy to have discovered them. I might even visit them sometime, since they are only about 1/2 hour away from my home!  And their labels are awesome….just sayin’.  What’s not to love?

I also love a company that gives back, and Underdog Wine Merchant’s Flip Flop Wines gives back in a big and much needed way. Flip Flop Wines Soles 4 Souls program is pretty spectacular. The program will raise much needed funds to give one pair of flip-flop sandals for each bottle of flipflop wine purchased (up to 100,000 pairs for the first 100,000 bottles sold).

  1. Yum! You know I like a good glass of vino now and then. I’ll have to keep an eye out for them, maybe buy a bottle for my sister for her to try.

  2. I was so happy to see the Soles 4 Souls banner on your post! This is one of my favorite charities because they do great work! I’ll be looking for Flip Flop wine the next time I’m at the store, too! Thanks for the tip! 🙂

  3. I just turned 21 as well and, like your son, I was chomping at the bit to try EVERYTHING! Hehe. I do enjoy a good glass of wine, but I’m more of a red kind girl then white.

I guess I just haven’t found the right white though! xD
