Give the Gift of Reading with Scholastic

I always, always, always give books as gifts, after all they are the gift that keeps on giving.  I’ve been a fan of Scholastic ever since I was a child and I took home the flyers to purchase books.  I’m still giddy when Paige brings these home.

Scholastic has been at the forefront of distributing quality and award-winning books for children for years and years and years.  After all, they are the experts when it comes to choosing the perfect books for every child on your holiday list.

David Allender, Editorial Director of Scholastic Reading Club has unveiled the Give the Gift of Reading Guide which showcases the top book trends for the 2013 holiday season from Scholastic Reading Club and Book Fairs.  Take a listen –

We received a set of books from Scholastic from the reading guide…and couldn’t be happier!  I’m a library lady – my kids have grown up receiving books and they love them.

While dinner was cooking, Paige and I decided to enjoy all of them!  My favorite is I’m a Frog.  Oh, how we laughed at Piggie and Frog.  Hilarious…and touching!  We sang to Pete The Cat Saves Christmas, she said that her music teacher incorporates the Pete books into their class time.  Cool, eh?  Splat the Cat Blow Snow Blow provided Paige with a chance to read a majority of the words.  She’s just learning to read, so the site words and repetition is what she needs.  She did a great job!  The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf was a really entertaining book.  The illustrations are so much fun!  We were both thankful that the wolf was only somewhat bad!

The Scholastic Give the Gift of Reading Guide 2013 includes –

Read Aloud Traditional Stories With a Twist – (Toddler – 2nd Graders)

  • Cinders: A Chicken Cinderella by Jan Brett (Putnam)
  • The Three Little Pigs and the Somewhat Bad Wolf by Mark Teague (Orchard Books/Scholastic
  • Santa Claus and the Three Bears by Maria Modugno, illustrated by Jane Dyer and Brooke Dyer (HarperCollins)
  • Pete the Cat Saves Christmas created and illustrated by James Dean, story by Eric Litwin (HarperCollins).

Reading aloud is an ideal way to have some quality family time during the season and all year long – and it comes with great benefits for children. According to research, young children who hear more words through reading aloud have larger vocabularies than their classmates by the time they enter kindergarten. Fairy tales are the perfect read-aloud genre. These attention-grabbing books can turn your favorite classics upside-down – guaranteed to be a family favorite.

Get Funny to Foster Independent Reading – (Kindergarteners – 2nd Graders)

  • Elephant and Piggy: I’m a Frog by Mo Willems (Hyperion)
  • Fly Guy Presents: Sharks by Tedd Arnold (Scholastic)
  • Splat the Cat: Blow, Snow, Blow by Rob Scotton (HarperCollins).

Pick books that will make kids erupt with laughter. Books that showcase humor help first-time readers equate reading with fun and enjoyment.

Introduce Fantasy – (3rd – 6th Graders)

  • Notebook of Doom: Day of the Night Crawlers by Troy Cummings (Scholastic)
  • Geronimo Stilton: Kingdom of Fantasy: The Volcano Fire by Geronimo Stilton (Scholastic)
  • The Special Edition Harry Potter Box Set by J.K. Rowling with artwork by Kazu Kibuishi (Scholastic).

Fantasy ignites the imagination in all of us. Select books that transport a child into another world. This genre will boost reading confidence and stamina through fast-paced and compelling tales.

Choose Inspiring Underdog Stories for Tweens and Teens – (Middle School and up)

  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Hard Luck by Jeff Kinney (Abrams)
  • The Heroes of Olympus: House of Hades by Rick Riordan (Hyperion)
  • The Hunger Games: Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (Scholastic) for mature teen readers (ages 12 and up)

Wherever you turn, these characters are everywhere! From a fun story of a middle-school aged boy facing hard-knocks, to a group of teenage gods on earth fighting evil, to a young woman living in a dystopian world, these books will be hard for your tween and teen to put down this holiday.

All of the books and many more are available through Scholastic Book Fairs, Scholastic Reading Club or book stores nationwide.  Remember, when you purchase through the Scholastic Book Fairs and reading clubs you are supporting your child’s school and classroom.  It’s such an easy way to give back!

  1. Hard to pick a favorite. We have a Winnie the Pooh Christmas book with sounds. Even though the kids are older, it’s a tradition to read it.

  2. It’s still ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas, I carry on the Christmas Eve tradition of reading it before bed with my kids, just like my mom did with me

  3. I love The Nativity Collection by Robert J. Morgan – the week before Christmas, we read one of the six stories each night before bedtime! Thanks for the chance to win!
