Is it that hard to install overhead lighting in houses?

Floor lamps, solutions for no overhead lighting

Both of the houses that we have lived in had no overhead lighting. Well except for the kitchens and bathrooms. It was a major frustration for us both times. In the first house we had in our married life, we depended on floor lamps in our bedrooms. We would have been lost without them, as we wouldn’t have had any light! We had a floor lamp in each bedroom, and they were the kind that were adjustable – we could make the room really bright, or we could have it dimmer if need be. Eventually we had ceiling fan/light combos installed in each room, but funny enough, we still kept the floor lamps.

It is a good thing we kept the floor lamps, as when we moved into our second house, there was also no overhead lighting in the bedrooms. How hard can this be to do when building a house?? We had fan/light combos installed in this house fairly soon after moving in, but the floor lamps sure came in handy while we were waiting.

After having the ceiling fans installed tt was nice to finally get to pick and choose where we wanted lamps, instead of having to use them due to lack of lighting.  Our living room and bedroom now glow with beautiful table lamps that we chose to match the rest of our decor. It was really fun shopping for these, mostly because we didn’t have to have them just to see. We picked our lamps for the ambiance factor, and our house is now cozy and well lit. Hopefully when we buy our third and final house {when we retire}, that the ceiling lights will already be there, so we don’t have to go through this again!

  1. If there aren’t ceiling lights in your third home, I know an electrician you can borrow 🙂 He recently installed a few can lights and track lighting at a friend’s house. I might be biased, but he does great work.

    1. OH! Annnd I asked – and he said the NEC {National Electric Code} states that there must be a means of turning a light on an off. It doesn’t specifically state that a light must be installed. Since it’s considerably cheaper to just run a wire to an outlet and switch part of the outlet, most contractors opt to go that route. 😉 Learn something new!

  2. I have to admit, I’ve never seen a house without overhead lights, and my house is over 100 years old! They all have their quirks though, that’s for sure. In our house they rewired the electricity so every large appliance runs on the same breaker (wash machine, microwave, fridge) so we can’t wash clothes and microwave food at the same time.

  3. Wow. I guess I just never thought of a house not having overhead lighting in at least a fan/light combo. Each room of our house either had a fan with a light or an overhead light. How crazy that you ended up with two homes that had virtually no overhead lighting!

  4. I’m so glad we have overhead lights in all our rooms, except wall light in the bathrooms. The wall lights in the bathroom are up high and are bright so that’s not a problem. I’m glad our living room ceiling light had a fan installed already and our master bedroom was wired for it, so we just installed a new light with the ceiling fan.
I actually wish the dinning room was wired for a ceiling fan, instead of just a light. I also wish the other two bedrooms were wired for ceiling fans instead of just ceiling lights. I’m sure we could hire an electrician to do it, but I don’t think they like going up into our attic, because part of it is hard to get through in half the house where the ceilings are high, and don’t you know that’s where they have to go through to get through to the rest of the attic.
