Give Please a Chance – #GivePleaseaChance

I have always been a big believer in manners, and I taught my children to mind their manners from the minute they started talking. Even before they could speak, I always made sure I said “please” and “thank you” each time they handed me something, did something nice, or followed through on something I requested. My mother was the same way with me, so I guess it just comes naturally. In the new book by James Patterson and Bill O’Reilly, Give Please a Chance, the word “please” is discussed and different ways of showing how it can be used are demonstrated. I absolutely LOVE this idea!

In this inspired collaboration, bestselling authors Bill O’Reilly and James Patterson remind us all that a single word—”Please?”—is useful in a thousand different ways. From finding a lovable stray dog to needing a partner on a seesaw, from reading a bedtime story to really, really needing a cookie, Give Please a Chance depicts scenes and situations in which one small word can move mountains. With a vivid array of illustrations by seventeen different artists, this charming, helpful book is a fun and memorable way for children to learn the magic power of one simple word: please.

Give Please a Chance can I keep a DOG

I have to be honest – when someone asks me to do something, and they don’t say please, it really rubs me the wrong way. To me, it sounds like an order rather than a request. That is probably why I was, and still am, adamant about making sure this simple word is used anytime you request something from someone. It doesn’t matter who it is – “please” should always be used.

The authors of Give Please a Chance:

Bill O’Reilly currently serves as the anchor of FOX News Channel’s The O’Reilly Factor, the most watched cable news show for the past 14 years. His books for children include the Last Days biographies, The O’Reilly Factor for Kids, and Kids are Americans Too.

James Patterson received the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community at the 2015 National Book Awards. A tireless champion of the power of books and reading, he has created a new children’s book imprint, JIMMY Patterson, whose mission is simple: “We want every kid who finishes a JIMMY Book to say, ‘PLEASE GIVE ME ANOTHER BOOK.’”

I do have a couple of tips of my own that I would like to share with you.

Don’t let it go “just this once”. One thing with manners with kids is you have to be consistent (just like with everything else). If they fail to say, “please”, do not just do what they ask. Not only does it make them less likely to use it in the future, but it makes it seem okay for them to order you around.

Make sure they say it to others too. It’s great that they might say please for you, but maybe they don’t for other people (or vice versa). Neither is less important, so it is critical to emphasize that they should use their manners all of the time. And don’t let them slip just because you are their parent.

I would love to hear how you get your child to say, “please”, as well as “thank you”!

I think it is really neat that not-your-typical children’s authors are creating such helpful, fun and meaningful children’s books. JIMMY Patterson books will definitely be on holiday wish lists this year!
