Karoun Dairies Cheese Review

I love cheese – I always have since I was a wee one. My love for cheese started with a simple cheddar and through the years as my palate has changed, so have my cheese preferences. Although I still enjoy cheddar, I have branched out and discovered so many other wonderful cheese flavors.

I am so happy to introduce you to a cheese company I just recently discovered – Karoun Dairies! When they mentioned that they were going to send me some cheeses to sample, they weren’t kidding. I received a huge selection of amazing cheeses! But first, a little bit about Karoun Dairies from their website:

Our dairy products are free of thickeners, stabilizers and fillers and made strictly with fresh rBST growth hormone free Real California Milk. This insures that our products retain all of the traditional qualities neccessary in a healthy Mediterranean diet, a diet rich in nutritious all natural cheeses and yogurts. Through our five proprietary brands, Karoun Dairies, Inc. services various ethnic markets in the United States: Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, Indian, European, Hispanic, Greek, Russian, Armenian and main-stream American.

When I opened the carefully packed box of cheese from Karoun Dairies, I was stunned and speechless {yeah, yeah, I know the thought of me speechless amuses some of you!}. But seriously, they sent a bunch!

I called my 21-year old son down to sample the cheeses with me and we had a blast. Included in my selection were feta, feta with green olives & thyme, grilling cheese, braided string cheese (both regular and marinated with olive oil and herbs), Farmers Basket Cheese, Goat Cheese, Labne spreadable yogurt cheese and nonfat mediterranean style yogurt. We received two of each item!

Braided String Cheese:

I have had regular string cheese many times, but this is something truly unique {and equally tasty}. The plain braided string cheese is actually more flavorful than the typical/store brands I have tried. Not only is it fun to “unbraid” it, but to pull the pieces apart is quite amusing too! Kids will definitely love this as much as the adults. The flavor of the string cheese with olive oil, garlic and herbs was fantastic.  I never knew string cheese was available this way.

Labne Spreadable Yogurt & Yogurt Cheese:

I have never heard of this before but I absolutely love it. The flavor was rich and the texture was creamy. There are so many things this can be used for.  The nonfat yogurt was SO good.  We love using yogurt for toppings instead of the more fattening choices.  We also make smoothies with yogurt.  Karoun Dairies yogurt is rich and just the right consistency.  It definitely improved the flavor and texture of our smoothies!

Traditionally made by draining whey from slightly salted yogurt, Labne is a thick & creamy yogurt cheese and a healthier alternative to regular cream cheese. It is also rich enough to be used as a substitute for sour cream.

Feta/Goat Cheese:

I adore Feta cheese, as does my son, but I previously hadn’t tried flavored feta cheese.  The feta with green olives & thyme was so flavorful!  We have used this in salads several times, as well as on sandwiches {my son likes to toast sandwiches with feta on top}.  The regular feta was rich and so good, without being pungent.

The basket cheese is also something I have never had before, but I am now a fan 🙂   I love cheese curds, and this is very similar.  The first time I tried cheese curds was while visiting relatives in Wisconsin when I was a kid.  They called it “squeaky cheese”.  My son wasn’t sure what to make of this at first, but he quickly decided he loved it too.

This old world cheese is probably the first of its kind known to man. Basket Cheese is delicately flavored with a scent of freshly pressed curds and a slightly chewy texture.

The grilling cheese was something else I hadn’t tried before. Oh my goodness.  I made some fried chicken one night and decided to fry some slices of this cheese in the pan after the chicken.  What an extraordinary experience.  My kids and I pretty much fought over the fried slices.  They tasted so good and are something so different than we had ever tried before.  I am craving more!

We shared some of the cheese with my dad and brother and they loved it too. I am big on freshness and quality, and both of these definitely shine through in Karoun Dairies cheeses. I will definitely be purchasing their products again, and I am excited to try their other specialty cheese and dairy products as well. Karoun Dairies also has butter, milk, sour cream and so much more. Luckily they are available at my local supermarkets!

I really hope you will give Karoun Dairies a try – I don’t think you will be disappointed. You can learn more about them, their products and also use the handy store locator on their website.  Make sure you check out their recipe section too!

The nice folks at Karoun Dairies are also letting me host a giveaway – two of my lucky readers will get to sample their cheeses as well!
