A kitchen takeover by the kids (cure those winter blues!)

A kitchen takeover by the kids!

Sometimes it can get a little boring inside the house for kids during the cold winter months, especially when they have been cooped up for several days. Sometimes playing outside is not an option, and it can be a struggle to find ways to keep them entertained.  I can help! Read on about our kitchen takeover by the kids!

A kitchen takeover by the kids!

I had my friend’s girls over a few days ago (I love these girls – whenever they come over we do something “crafty” and sometimes cook). No matter what we do, we have loads of fun. This particular day, we were in the kitchen and one of the girls asked if they could bake something. Sure, why not, right? What she suggested was kind of fun and I had to think about it for a few minutes before deciding that yes, they can! Her idea was for me to put out a small bowl of flour, and different sugars and they would create something without a recipe. Was I crazy for saying yes?

I pulled out flour, sugar, brown sugar, powdered sugar, salt, baking soda, baking powder, cocoa powder, milk, eggs, vanilla, and chocolate chips. I also set out measuring cups, spoons and mixing bowls.

I just watched as they added ingredients, not knowing what they were making (neither did they!). Was I going to regret this kitchen takeover by the kids?

After much mixing (and some tasting), they figured out what they were making. One had a cookie dough consistency, so she added chocolate chips and put the dough balls on a cookie sheet. The other girl had a batter that was like cake batter, so we found her a baking dish, sprayed it with some cooking spray and put it in the oven with the cookies.

I was unsure how their goodies would turn out, but we were all pleasantly surprised with we pulled them out of the oven. The cookies looked like cookies:

Now came the real test though – tasting.

I couldn’t believe how great their goodies turned out. The cookies were definitely cookies, and I wish we had actually written down what she added. They were delicious, and the consistency was perfect. The cake was light and fluffy and had a nice cocoa flavor.

Of course, not all creations will turn out so good, but the girls had so much fun, and they stated how they would love to do it again.

I hope you’ll allow a kitchen takeover by the kids too!

  1. What a neat idea! It’s really awesome that their cookies and cake turned out so well. I might have to try this with my grandchildren. Thanks!

  2. My kids love cooking. Oldest wants to cook everything. They are currently too sick to cook, so I try to do stuff that involves the kitchen for crafting, like salt dough.

    Thanks!

  3. It looks like the kids had fun and everything looks delicious! I never thought to use marshmallows in any cookie recipe. If the kids experiment again you might want to record them so if they come up with another great creation you can go back and write down the recipe.

  4. I love baking for the holidays! I like to make all different kinds of goodies then make baskets for family and friends. Merry Christmas 🙂

  5. I had a tough time letting my four sons near the kitchen. I preferred to do it myself but 2 of those 4 practically became gourmet chefs on their own. Made it the forbidden fruit.

  6. It is so important to foster creativity. I love this post, because it shows the patience and encouragement of two fantastic little girls when it comes to creating something that might or might not work.
