Add More “Funukkah” to Hanukkah with The Mensch on a Bench

Typically, we don’t start our holiday decorating until the weekend after Thanksgiving but, this year, we got an early start. Of course, in recent years, that includes our friendly little elf. Popping around from place to place while the kids are asleep, it’s become a fun tradition to search for him each morning to see what crazy antics he’d been up to while we slept. The kids’ classes each have a cute little elf that helps to check in on the children during the school day. As much as we love our little holiday house guest, I’ve often wondered how an elf could possibly tie into the celebrations of Hanukkah.

Now, while we do not personally celebrate the Hanukkah holiday, many of our friends and neighbors do. Surely, most of them have welcomed elves into their homes as a representative of the winter season but, in actuality, it doesn’t truly add to the celebration of Hanukkah. When our mensch arrived, the first thing that came to mind was, oddly enough, Adam Sandler and his 8 Crazy Nights movie that we had watched earlier that afternoon. Mensch on a Bench was created by a Jewish father who wanted to teach his sons about the Jewish holiday while adding new traditions to the family. First came the story of Moshe the Mensch who helped Judah Maccabee at the temple. Moshe played dreidel, loved gelt, and was a true Mensch. Next came the doll which could hold the Shamash candle and watch over the Menorah.

The newfound tradition that coincides with Mensch on a Bench is a wonderful addition to the holiday season. Despite not personally celebrating the Hanukkah holiday, I am thrilled to have been introduced to this little fella and grateful to have had the opportunity to, not only, teach my own children more about the holiday but to also share our own Mensch with friends of ours and, now, with all of you!
