Have I got some fun news for you! Harper Collins has two REALLY fun new books for kids ages 8-12 – Olga and the Smelly Thing from Nowhere and Stick Cat: A Tail of Two Kitties (see what they did there – tail? Love it!).  Both books are heavily illustrated and are ideal for reluctant readers, budding artists, and animal lovers.

First up: OLGA AND THE SMELLY THING FROM NOWHERE

Olga and the Smelly Thing from Nowhere and Stick Cat: A Tail of Two Kitties!

This book is about Olga, who finds a creature in her garbage can one day, and all it says is “MEH!”

This just cracked me up when I read it, because my husband, daughter and I say, “Meh” all the time! It’s kind of an inside joke with some friends we have.  But on to the book!

This creature in the garbage can won’t eat or sleep, but it snores, it stinks, and Olga studies it like mad. She actually loves it and decides to name it after herself–an OLGAMUS.

Olga goes to the library but doesn’t discover much about the creature but she DOES find out that it LOVES olives. Who knew?

These incidents take place over a few days in Olga’s never-dull life. She finds a great amount of information about herself, and also about everything from the scientific method,  Jane Goodall and some of her favorite odd creatures, to the ins and outs of friendship and every human’s use for living in a community.

This book is really funny, and I think kids (ages 8-12) will absolutely love it. It is perfect for fans of the books “Dear Dumb Diary” and “My Big Fat Zombie Goldfish”, and great preparation for “El Deafo”, “Roller Girl”, and “Smile”.

Next up: STICK CAT: A TAIL OF TWO KITTIES

Olga and the Smelly Thing from Nowhere and Stick Cat: A Tail of Two Kitties!
Well, if you know me, you know that I LOVE cats. That’s probably why I like the book so much. This is such a cute book, and is perfect for fans of “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, “Big Nate”, and animal lovers everywhere. Kids will love Stick Cat and its heavily illustrated young reader series, from the author of “Stick Dog”, Tom Watson!

The first adventure (available now), finds a big day in the big city for Stick Cat and his best friend, Edith. They find treasures to hunt, pigeons to catch, songs to sing, and of course naps to take after their busy day. There is danger though, way up on the 23rd floor. There are terrible noises,  and then violent crashes trap a desperate man in the building across the alley. Stick Cat wants to help, but he will need to navigate his way across the alley, and also around Edith’s strange ways—to attempt a rescue.

The illustrations in this book are really clever. Kids will have so much fun with it.

The next adventure, “Stick Cat: Cats in the City”, arrived in stores April 25th – make sure you check it out too!

Author Bio
Tom Watson lives in Chicago with his wife, daughter, and son. He is the author of the Stick Dog series and the Stick Cat series. This is the first book in that series. Tom does not have a cat. So his ideas for the Stick Cat series come from a whole different place. He’s not sure where that place is exactly, but he knows it’s kind of strange there. While he has your attention, Tom would like to make one thing perfectly clear: There are not going to be any other stick animal books. There won’t be a Stick Monkey, for instance. Or Stick Chicken (even though that’s fun to say) or even Stick Giraffe (even though that would be fun to draw). He’s having plenty of fun just with dogs and cats.

Both of the above books are available in stores now, and are ideal for Ages 8- 12.
