Pets are expensive! Tips for saving money

I shudder to think how much money I have spent on all of my cats over the years. The food, vet, treats, toys and litter supplies all add up over time. I wouldn’t have it any other way though, as my babies warm my heart over and over again – each and every day.

Our cats eat canned food and dry food, and our dearly departed kitty Sylvester would only eat a specialty cat food. Talk about expensive! The prices have increased on cat food so much, and it is a big part of our grocery bill. Cat litter kind of varies, but I have found that buying big bags/containers at discount warehouses does save an amazing amount of money. The only problem with buying at places such as these is they don’t always carry your preferred brand. Though cat litter is cheaper at discount stores, I tend to buy it the same time as I do my regular groceries – at the local grocery store. Part of it is the convenience, and the other part is they always carry my brand of choice.

Some of the inexpensive litters really don’t work so well (in my opinion). They tend to not contain the odors as well, and I end up changing the boxes more frequently. What I have found is that it is worth the money to buy a better brand, and change litter less often.

I have also found that clumping litter is the way to go. By tending to a good clumping litter, it lessens the amount of time I spend physically changing the boxes (my most hated chore ever). It kind of makes sense to just get rid of the litter that has been used (has clumped) and keep the rest of it in the box. Quality clumping litters will keep odors to a minimum and messes too.

The Sunday paper coupon inserts almost always have coupons for cat litter too, so I make sure to always clip and save them. Looking online can also result in some great savings on cat litter.

How do you save money on pet supplies? I would love to hear your ideas!
