Power Up & Read! It’s the Scholastic and Energizer #SummerReading Challenge 2015

Disclosure review
I understand the need for children to read over the summer and I’m super exited that Paige is participating in the Power Up & Read Summer Reading Challenge with the Scholastic and Energizer.  Obviously, I’m excited about the reading but I’m also really excited about the theme – what better way to incorporate STEM, science and the world of inventions?

Actually, I’m not sure who is more excited, myself or Paige!

We received a kit to get us going that includes some exciting books – both fiction and non-fiction about science and STEM.  My girl – simply provide her with books and she’s happy.  She’s content.  She’s learning.

Summer Reading

I’ve shared before that she has a love for reading. Utilizing the completely free and online Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge allows access to reading certificates, log sheets, pledges, book lists, games and more! Parents, prevent that “summer slide”, reading books all summer will help your child retain all of those core skills they’ve learned over the school year.  You can sign up your child or go the extra mile and sign up the entire family on the Scholastic website. The Summer Reading Challenge runs through September 4, 2015.

The theme for the summer reading challenge is Power Up & Read. Scholastic and Energizer have partnered up to encourage families to find innovative ways to discover the power and joy of reading.  Kids can log their reading minutes to unlock stories written by popular authors like R.L Stein, Jude Watson and Gordon Korman.  Plus, they have the chance to ear rewards and win prizes.  And (I know, there’s more!) they will help set a new reading world record for the summer.  Last year reading record was 304,749,681 minutes – can we beat that record this year?  I think so!

Scholastic has all of the resources needed to make it a successful summer spent reading. Maggie McGuire, parenting expert and VP of Scholastic Parents Channel has tips to help get the summer reading challenge powered up for you!

Power Up & Read: 5 Parenting Tips for Summer Reading

  • Find books that makes kids laugh
  • Introduce kids to STEM and science through reading
  • Ways to get crafty with your kid’s favorite summer reads
  • Tips for reading-on-the-go during summer vacation
  • Rainy day reading activities

It’s important to keep your kids reading all summer long!

If that wasn’t enough, Energizer and Scholastic are partnering to create the “Power the Possibilities” campaign.  This campaign gives parents the tools they need to unlock their child’s talents, fuel their ambitions and set them up for future success.  You can buy any specially marked pack of Energizer brand batteries to scratch for a chance to win one of thousands of prizes that will power discovery and learning.

Prizes include a family trip to New York City, a Scholastic Study Corner Makeover, a tablet with Scholastic apps, a library of Scholastic books and more! Everyone who plays can also download free digital stories for their family.  I’m all about getting books in the hands of a child, whether that is a physical book or an ebook!

I’m lucky, Paige loves to read…and she’ll read just about anything!  Right now, she’s big into chapter books and anything about dogs.  It was easy for her to pick up The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick.  As one of my favorite stories, I love how the illustration help tell the story, it’s powerful!

  4. I think this is a really good idea and the kit seems really cool. My son was in a reading program when he was in school, but I don’t think it was as good as this one.

  5. I think this is awesome. When I was young we had a bookmobile that went around during the summer, and you could rent books. I loved it. Kept us all reading the entire summer. Now that books are much more accessible, programs like this will help to encourage kids to read.

  6. I think i would get my child involved in reading this summer he is only six but they never too young too try i always read too him but i want too prepare him for the first grade this coming september.

  7. This is such a cool program! Some of my fondest memories from my childhood are reading good books during the Summer time. It’s a nice thing to that they offer so many activities and incentives for free too!

  8. I used to read every summer, all summer. I wish I still had that much time to get lost in a book and not have to pay attention to time.

  9. this is great…I so wish we have a way to take books to kids in the summer. I took my son to the library and will continue to do the same thing. Reading is something that has to be practiced!

  10. I think it’s wonderful to get kids to read. Our library has a reading program during summer where the kids get prizes the more they read

  11. I think reading all the time….even in summer is so very important to children. Not a forced read, but reading of books that allow them to learn without realizing they are learning…lol..
