When we moved into our new house, the very first thing that we did to truly make it ours was hang four canvases. The kids painted them and have taken pride in their creation ever since. Their artwork brightens up a huge feature wall in our home and, now that we’ve been here for some time, I still think back to the moment we hung up those paintings. One simple project transformed our house into a home and, best of all; it was done at the kids’ hands. Since then, they’ve grown incredibly fond of mastering their artwork through numerous outlets including painting, coloring, drawing, photographing, and so much more. Of course, being kids, their subjects are usually their own toys. One of their most favorite items to base their artwork on is their own LEGO brick creations.

I’m sure that, by now, you’ve all seen or at least heard of the recent release of the LEGO Star Wars trailer. That, well, that is exactly what happens in our home on a near daily basis. The kids play with their toys, capture cell phone videos, and capture photos of their creations quite often. While it may seem like just another silly childhood quirk, there really is something great behind it. Whether your child is jotting down their first scribbles with chunky crayons or wishing for the coolest “it” camera of the season, art is and always will be art. If that means a toddler’s cell phone pictures of their favorite toys in a messy play room, so be it. They once asked me why no one else likes these pictures. They’re accustomed to portrait photography, famous paintings, scenic images, hand drawn artwork, and then some but, outside of the usual marketing pictures and commercial placements, photos of toys aren’t exactly all too common.

When I was recently introduced to a new company that finally takes this idea to a whole new level, I jumped all over the opportunity to not only share it with my own children but with all of you! With that being said, please allow me to introduce you to SillyBrickPics.

SillyBrickPics is to my children’s cell phone photos as a Warhol creation is to my kids’ finger painting projects. It takes such a simple idea and puts an entirely new artistic spin on it.

We’ve combined our love of the LEGO brand building toys and our years of experience with photography, to create a very special kind of product. It’s cooked up through a recipe of humor, nostalgia, and pop culture that seems to reach the inner child in all of us, while eliciting the biggest smiles from all. Our funny photography can be enjoyed as cool posters, photographic prints, phone cases, calendars, and much more!

In all honesty, I am not sure that I could have said it better myself.

When it comes to decorating our own house by way of wall art, we’ve always tried to stray from the modern trends. Favorite characters, top movies, music taste – it all changes with time. In an effort to not put hundreds upon thousands of holes in our walls for hanging décor, we try our best to stray from whatever may be “in” this week. LEGOs and great photography, however, are quite timeless. Our kids play with LEGOs, we’ve played with LEGOs, our parents have played with LEGOs… who doesn’t love it?!

The new aspect here, and in terms of SillyBrickPics is the creativity. Just take a look!

SillyBrickPics, Forgetting Something?
After chatting with Rob about this amazing little family owned and operated business, he was kind enough to share with me a few of his incredible pieces. Having decided to feature his work in our kids’ room, I let the boys browse the SillyBrickPics and had them each choose a few of their own favorite silly “pics.” These are the few that we came up with:

  • Policeman
  • “A Hard Day’s Work”
  • “Buzz and Stormtroopers”

With little boys that love just about everything superhero related, I must admit that the SillyBrickPics Policeman choice was a family choice.

Having a great deal of law enforcement in our own family, this particular piece had great meaning for us. While we all certainly love a great superhero story, we know firsthand that the true heroes are those men and women that put their lives on the line for others. The police force, of course, perfectly depicts that. This particular option is also available in a firefighter version and a soon to be released soldier version as well.

As for the second piece of artwork – “A Hard Day’s Work” – this choice was actually one made by one of our little guys all on his own. His initial reaction to seeing the piece was quite observant and, really, rather sweet.

“That is a BIG job for a tiny, little boy. Kind of like cleaning my toys.”

He even went on to ask if I thought he (the depicted LEGO character) finished the job and got to have a special snack. You be the judge. Do you think the job was finished?

And last but certainly not least, the “Buzz and Stormtroopers” piece. This particular selection is probably my favorite of the bunch not necessarily for the image itself but also because of the meaning that it subtly portrays. While many would see this as nothing more than a favorite Disney children’s character and an army of greats, our son saw more than that… MUCH more than that.

“It is okay to be different. The same is boring. Different is cool. Like Buzz.”

As a parent, I could not be more proud of that statement. Both of our boys have a certain drive in them to be different and to be themselves regardless of what anyone else may do or say. Mismatching clothes, goofy hairstyles, playing a game that’s out of the norm, penning their own book just to have a “super cool” one, and so much more; they are certainly in a class of their own. While they surely have their moments of wanting to fit in with a group, I love that they are not afraid to be themselves and I’m proud to have such a beautiful depiction of that. Dare to be different – in your life and in your art.

Now, as we are still in the process of trying to fully decorate our house in regard to wall art, I am glad to be able to say that the kids’ room is officially complete thanks to the great, quality pieces from SillyBrickPics. Each of our own items has great meaning for our family and they are truly timeless. While the kids will surely outgrow their current favorite toys and characters, one of the few that will most certainly live on through the years is LEGO. And, at the end of the day, who doesn’t enjoy a great photo. The idea behind SillyBrickPics is pure genius and I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to share that with all of you. Just look at how amazing this looks! I cannot wait to find the perfect frame for each of them!
