Swanson’s Great Stuffing Debate

Swanson's Great Stuffing Debate

Swanson's Great Stuffing Debate

With Thanksgiving just a few days away, it is time to start planning, shopping for and preparing the big meal. This can be a daunting task, or it can be fun. I prefer fun!

To me, Swanson’s and Thanksgiving go hand in hand, and they have some fun things going on right now.  They so kindly sent  me a gift card to purchase ingredients to make a holiday meal, using Swanson’s broth, to show my readers.  My family and I had an early holiday meal {which they enjoyed thoroughly!}.  Home made stuffing is so yummy, and using Swanson’s broth and Pepperidge Farms bread crumbs made this excellent, and was super easy to prepare.

The finished product:

And our delicious meal {Rotisserie chicken, corn, potato casserole, and stuffing made with Swanson’s broth}:

So now on to the fun part!  EVERYONE AGREES that it’s not a proper holiday without stuffing.  But EVERYONE DISAGREES about what should be in that stuffing.  Bread crumbs or cornbread? Dried fruit?  Nuts?  Sausage?  One person’s “yum” is another’s “yuck!” And where there is conflict, there is wicked comedy just waiting to happen.

Swanson’s Great Stuffing Debate is loads of fun. What can you do there? Check it out!

Here is what is going on over at The Great Stuffing Debate website:

• The Debate Center – Weigh in on questions that gauge stuffing preferences and other related topics.

• In the Kitchen – Use the stuffing spinner to find the perfect stuffing – from traditional to adventurous and everything in between – as well as other holiday recipes, cooking tips and techniques, substitution solutions, and leftovers ideas.

• Stuffing Skirmish – This humorous video shows what happens when good people do bad stuffing. Watch the family dynamics unfold as two very different sides of the family – with equally different views on stuffing – come together for the holiday feast.

• Fun Stuff – Get ready for the Turkey Dance! The Swanson CGI turkey does the tango, dances like Elvis and takes a trip to the 70s. Choose a favorite and share with friends and family via email, Facebook or Twitter.

  1. I LOVE to put wild rice, mushrooms, celery, onion, lots of spices and monterey jack cheese!!! 🙂 It’s SOOOO yummy!

  2. We usually use bread or seasoned bread cubes, celery, onion, sage/poultry seasoning, homemade broth. Sometime we may do a variation if requested.

  3. In our stuffing, we use dried out white bread, and add celery, onion, sage, poultry seasoning, broth, margerine, and a little salt and pepper.

  4. The stuffing I make is the same recipe that my grandmother made for the turkey. It is basic with white bread, celery, butter, onion, a bit of garlic, salt, pepper and sage and for a bit of moisture some chicken broth (but not much of that ).

  5. i like garlic, celery and chicken broth in my stuffing–YUM!! 🙂

  6. I must confess, I don’t eat stuffing, but I know my Mom loves to try different recipes. I can tell you she learned not to use very low carb bread on year, it turned out gummy and like glue!

  7. No one eats it but me. I make Stovetop stuffing and use chicken broth and add raisins.

    lkish77123 at gmail dot com

  8. My aunt is in charge of the big holiday cooking. She makes some sort of old fashioned stuffing recipe handed down from my Grandmother. I don’t care for it though, because it’s soggy and she cooks it in the bird, yuck! When I make stuffing as a side dish at home, I love plain old Stove Top. But next time I think I will try some mix ins with my Stove Top. Probably some dried cranberries.

  9. We do it the southern way which is add a liitle of the turkey cut up, onions, and just a touch of sage. We make giblet gravy to pour over the stuffing. It has boiled eggs chopped up in it along with the chopped livers and gizzards. It is really good. To make it even better, we bake a small cornbread and will put half of it in the stufffing also.

  10. I don’t make it either I just usually do the stove top box or pepperidge farm bag stuffing and add broth and I love it
    tbarrettno1 at gmail dot com

  11. I tend to be more of a bread, seasoning, and some veggies guy. We might sometimes do some form of sausage, but it really depends. I’m definitely not a fan of cornbread dressing. I know that for chickens, we try to get them pre-stuffed from Louisiana – broccoli cheese w/ rice is one of my favorites. Otherwise, we tend to use the easier boxed stuffing for a more normal meal.

  12. I like to take butter and melt it, put diced celery and diced onions in to saute them, add either old cubed bread or what you buy at the store, mixed that together, you can add raisens to it if you like, or dried cranberries, yum yum. omccoy

  13. We make southern cornbread dressing with cornmeal, buttermilk, celery, onion, sage, eggs, buttermilk, flour, and 1 tablespoon of sugar.

  14. I just adding my onions, celery, green pepper, mushrooms and seasonings……all moistened up w/ Swanson’s Chicken Broth!

    Thanks!

  15. we like it simple: bread cubes, celery, onion, seasoning, broth, butter
no to: ‘shrooms, nuts, oysters, sausage, apples, cranberries, etc
and no gravy on it unless is is too dry. 🙂

  16. We have a corn bread stuffing with sausage, peaches and nuts. It’s pretty awesome. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway

  24. We like dried cranberries, walnuts, celery, and onion in our stuffing…yum!

    appetizerforacraftymind(at)yahoo(dot)com

  25. Love homemade stuffing. I put in my stuffing some chicken or turkey stock and then chop up celery, onions, raisins and some chopped apples…it’s always delicious

  26. Honestly, my Mom has made Stovetop stuffing for years and, while I add a bit of gravy, we have always kept it at just the basic stuffing! I love it!
    jinglesells at gmail dot com

  27. I’m following Swanson’s Broth on twitter @buttonlove

    appetizerforacraftymind(at)yahoo(dot)com

  28. I actually don’t make it from scratch (I use Stove Top SHHHH!) but I like onions and celery in it, that’s it.

    pricousins at aol dot com

  29. My Mom makes the best stuffing….need to get her recipe but she does meat, chopped carrots, celery and onions, with bread crumbs. And some seasoning…. Thanks for the chance to win!

  30. I make my mother’s recipe for stuffing – very simple! Bread cubes, celery, onions, butter, milk and salt and pepper. It has to be stuffed in the bird though!

  31. my dad makes it and it is out of this world! He uses part of the turkey parts, broth, bread pieces, vegetables like carrots and celery. we look forward to it every year

  32. We actually put very little in our dressing. Cornbread dressing mix, chicken stock, and some sauteed onions & celery. It doesn’t need more than that!

  33. Our family stuffing musts are celery, raisins, apples, and onions—my mother would say also giblets—I say absolutely no giblets.

  34. Depending on my mood, different things go into our stuffing, but love walnuts in there and would love to try their recipe with sausage too! Thank you!

  35. Our family likes just the basic recipe in our stuffing. Butter, bread chunks, onion, chicken stock, celery, a little milk, salt & pepper. Yum!

  36. We like stuffing real simple. No nuts or fruit or anything, just moist moist stuffing! Thanks for the giveaway!

  37. Sourdough stuffing moistened with turkey drippings. That with the addition of chopped pork sausage and water chestnuts.

  38. My dad makes our stuffing, i just buy store bought (SLAP!) he puts onions in it and I wouldnt be surprised if his new favorite ingredient showed up in it this year.. jalapenos. lol

  39. Let’s see, We put in Seasoning mix, Broth, some turkey onions.. and not onions. We have two different stuffings every year because some of us don’t like onions! It’s simplistic but I can’t imagine how many different ones we would be making if we added more ingredients!

  40. I make a more traditional stuffing that contains, bread crumbs, onions, eggs, the cooked turkey liver, parsley, melted butter, broth, salt, pepper, poultry seasoning and I also make an additional pan because the stuffing inside the bird is never enough, its the recipe I have been using for 30 yrs now and everyone seems to like it so I havent changed, no sausage . nuts or fruit bits for us, we just like it this way

    thanks for the great giveaway

  41. I like to keep my stuffing simple so I use Swansons chicken Broth, celery, onions, black olives and salt and pepper. Sometimes I add breakfast sausage.
    ja******@***oo.com
    Thank You!

  42. Bread, butter, celery, onions, spices, eggs, and cream of mushroom soup.

  46. We like to put in one box of Stove Top and some water, I guess I could try broth instead…

    😉

  47. We put onion and celery and also use the Pepperidge Farm herb-seasoned stuffing. Sometimes we add a bit of turkey or sausage.

    dogsrock at insightbb dot com

  48. I make traditional bread stuffing with sauteed onions and celery, but then add water chestnuts, walnuts and dried cranberries.

  49. I LOVE Stove Top but my #1 choice is my step-grandmothers Italian style stuffing. SO delicious! Is it Thanksgiving yet? Can’t wait for her stuffing tomorrow!!!!!

  50. We like lots of celery, onions and cornbread in our stuffing although I’d love to try Swanson’s Sausage and Walnut Dressing.

  51. My MIL puts in sausage and while i’m not a big fan of sausage, it is FANTASTIC. I could eat pound and pounds of her stuffing.

  52. I use Peppridge Farms seasoned bread crumbs & Italian sausage.
    Thank you.
barbara dot montyj at gmail dot com

  53. Our stuffing is made with stale bread, onions, celery, egg, chicken stock, and most importantly Bell’s Seasoning. That’s what makes it true New England stuffing.

  54. my aunt makes an awesome stuffing with chestnut in it – it’s my favorite thing at thanksgiving every year!!!

  55. We use Pepridge Farm stuffing, celery, onions, and other mish mash of seasonings – all stuffed into the bird. Thanks!

  56. I put seasoned bread crumbs, sausage, onion, celery, green pepper, apples, craisins, swanson chicken broth, butter, sage, and pepper in my stuffing.

  57. Traditionally I make a stuffing with cornbread and biscuits and plenty of sage. This year I added some celery and mushrooms…haven’t tried it out yet to see if it’s family approved. 🙂

  58. we don’t do stuffing–we do dressing–made with cornbread and sauteed veges like celery, onions and green pepper–sofened with broth and baked to golden brown.

  59. I add onions, celery, and green pepper sauteed in butter plus herbed stuffing and chicken broth to my stuffing.

  61. My favorite stuffing is this mushroom and rice stuffing my mom used to make, but other than rice and mushrooms, I have no idea what went into it. I’ll have to ask. But in my mother-in-law’s stuffing, which I had today, I love the celery. Thank you for the giveaway!

  62. Our family uses bread crumbs, celery, onions and sage in our stuffing. I’m actually not sure what else goes into it because I don’t make it, someone else in the family does.

  63. celery , onions, oil, and we use real bread and break it and leave it sit over night til it gets hard. My mom seasons it just right and I can tell you it’s out of this world

    It goes IN THE BIRD

    nightowlmamablogs at gmail dot com

  64. Black olives, garlic and jalapeno peppers are our secret stuffing ingredients. I am following, liking, joining and subscribing.

  65. I follow on Twitter sfytaes @Twitter I put bread cubes in my stuffing and celery, sage and sometimes corn. I pour swanson’s chicken broth over it. I can add sausage to this.

  66. My mom makes the best stuffing, but she doesn’t put anything unusual in it. I think the key is she still stuffs it in the bird and it comes out so moist.

  67. I like to fry up some corn bread and then crumble it up and add to already made stuffing mix. I then like to add some veggies like peppers and celery and swanson veggie or chicken stock. It’s so yummy and my family request this every year!

  68. Probably most people would consider our stuffing pretty bland–however, it is the only stuffing I’ll eat (although I’m interested in trying the Cranberry Pecan stuffing recipe). I use my mom’s recipe which calls for dried out bread (which you then dampen), eggs, the giblets (ground up), parsley, poultry seasoning, salt, MSG, celery salt. It’s delicious!
    al****@***il.com

  69. I like to put chicken broth, onions, and seasoning in my stuffing. Thanks for this nice giveaway :)!

  70. My stuffing has sauteed onions & celery, as well as poultry seasoning & sage & of course breadcrumbs.

  71. I made stuffing from scratch this holiday. I made homemade cornbread, let regular bread dry… the whole shebang. While I was sauteing the onions and celery I got a great idea. I put diced butternut squash in the pan too. It was a stroke of genius. I also put sausage in it. Everyone loved my stuffing and I got to sneak some extra veggies in.

  72. Hi and Happy Monday! 🙂 Ah, well, I’m not the cook… but to try to guess… the bread, celery, onions maybe… stuff like that. Well, I can tell you that it does not include meat of any kind, or nuts or anything like that. I guess it’s a basic recipe. Don’t care, love it all the same. 🙂

  73. My family loves to put sausage, spices, bread, celery, and onions in our stuffing. It comes out so good! Stuffing is one of my favorite dishes.

  74. Um. In my family, we make StoveTop. Cheesy, perhaps, but it’s yummy and easy. It also makes the stuffing the perfect amount of moisture – almost every time I’ve had other stuffing, it’s either been too dry or too soggy. So we like StoveTop stuffing in our stuffing 🙂

  75. We use crumbled home-made cornbread in our stuffing. (We use Grandmother’s recipe and call it dressing!)

  76. I use Stovetop 😀 I do however mix it up a little and use a broth for extra flavor. Sometimes I add some onions and celery for a little extra crunch. Thanks for the contest!

    1. Link above is incorrect. The correct link is twitter.com/mmbear5/status/10190916681728000

  86. We stick to the basics with our homemade stuffing – celery and onion, chicken broth, and and an egg.

  87. Actually, this year it was gravy. I switched burners so my sister’s pot would boil faster on a larger burner and she commented that the “liquid” in the pot was darker and then poured the breadcrumbs in the smaller pot which was the pot I was making the gravy in. We ended up straining the bread crumbs out and I had to strain the gravy for remaining breadcrumbs but I have to say the stuffing really tasted good this year. 🙂

  90. Our stuffing recipe is easy: dried-out bread dampened with liquid (water or chicken stock), eggs, the giblets (ground up), parsley, poultry seasoning, salt, MSG. It’s the only stuffing I’ll eat; however, I’m looking forward to trying that recipe for the Cranberry Pecan stuffing.

  96. I usually make my stuffing at holidays from scratch
I know many will go yuck but I take the neck, heart, liver, gizzard and slow cook in turkey broth until cooked thoroughly while that’s cooling I take the broth from that and add to brown wild rice, sausage, onion and cook/ fry until rice and sausage cooked, let cool,
in a big bowl I add chopped celery, onion, eggs, my leftover white and wheat bread that I have made into toasted croutons, sage seasoning, poultry seasoning, fresh ground pepper

  107. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving! I grew up in the South and my Mom always made a cornbread dressing with white bread and celery, onions, sage, and poultry seasoning.
