“Why?”
It is a single word and a question that I hear thousands upon thousands of times per day – yes, really. Of course, that goes hand in hand with having little ones and, actually, I’m quite proud of that. As annoying as the constant questioning can become, I am beyond delighted that they have perfected the will and determination to continually question the world around them. They say that once you start asking questions, your innocence is gone. Now, while that may be true in a sense, I don’t buy it for a second. Rather, I think that one loses their innocence when they are too afraid to question things.
“Never be too big to ask questions. Never know too much to learn something new.”
– Og Mandino
Growing up, I was always the self-proclaimed queen of asking questions and, subsequently, became the girl that was filled with random facts and, still, crazy questions. Because of that, I know that “bookkeeper” is the longest word in the English language with consecutive double letters; “NOON” can be read forward, backward, and upside-down; elephants cannot jump; there are no rhyming words for “orange” nor “purple;” Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA” was the first CD made in the US; your nose and your ears never stop growing; and, yes, I could run off this randomness to you for ages to come. Heck, I even taught myself how to sing and say the alphabet backward! As we get older, however, for one reason or another we stop questioning things. We stop searching for answers. We stop asking “who,” “what,” “when,” “where,” and “why.” And it is then and only then, that we stop learning. We forbid ourselves from grasping for more. We deprive ourselves of knowledge. But why?
So, yes, as frustrating as it may be to continuously find answers for my kids’ relentless questioning I will still do it. Day in and day out, I will always do my best to find them the answer. I will show them that it is okay to not have all of the answers. And I will teach them how to find their own answers when necessary. That being said, looking through massive books and research materials full of noting but text isn’t exactly ideal for little ones. Thankfully, TIME and their For Kids line has come to our rescue once more.
Having previously picked up the Big Book of Where, I was thrilled to have the recent opportunity to check out the more recent TIME for Kids Big Book of Why: Crazy, Cool, & Outrageous. Considering that “why” is the most used word in our house as well as my children’s most frequently used word anywhere, this book certainly seemed to be right up our alley.
As the follow-up to the original release of TIME for Kids Big Book of Why, the Big Book of Why: Crazy, Cool, & Outrageous has, just shy of, two hundred pages full of exciting new content. Separated into twelve categories – The Human Body, Animals, Nature, The Earth, Space, Science, Technology, Transportation, U.S. & World History, World Culture, Arts & Media, and Sports & Games – this book covers all of the bases for all of your child’s “Why?” questions. Here are some of our favorites from the book:
Living by the water, of course, meant that these two facts instantly caught our attention…
The kids, on the other hand, were thrilled with the inclusion of “super cool” things like monster trucks!
Daddy, being a big history buff, was happy to see that this book even teaches kids bits and pieces of the more important things…
I, having a knack for the more random things, definitely cracked a smile when I saw that this book proved my point in the he-said-she-said tomato battle.
We have certainly enjoyed having the opportunity to add this wonderful book to our collection. I absolutely love the fact that it encourages little ones to continue inquiring about and questioning the world around them. Constantly grasping for greater knowledge is a wonderful trait and I am thrilled that TIME for Kids is helping me in my mission to cheer them on in their quest. Heck, even I have picked up a few previously unknown facts from this book! It is definitely a win-win for everyone!

I actually found two books that I would love to own from Time for Kids. They are Time for Kids Big Book Of How and the TIME FOR KIDS World Atlas. With my oldest child every other word that came out of his mouth was why. Why was the grass green and the sky blue. Why do trees grow so tall. Then it went to How does it do that? This book is exactly what I needed and now it would help with the other children.
