How many times have has a child asked you a question that you wished you knew the answer to but in all honesty, you had no idea? As a Mom to 4 kids, I frequently get asked those type of questions. My favorite response is “let’s look that up online and find out together”. Well now we don’t have to have a computer to discover the answers to those type of questions because Time Home Entertainment and the editors of Time for Kids bring adults and kids a brand new book called “Time for Kids: The Big Book of How”. This book is packed with 501 facts and answers to questions kids commonly ask about how the world around them works, but adults can rarely answer.
Geared toward children ages 9-12 this 192 page book is filled with tons of useful information, 1,001 facts, detailed explanations that are written in a way children can easily understand and more than 200 colorful photographs and illustrations to help educate and engage young minds.
As a homeschooling Mom, I was especially drawn to this book because I knew it could contain lots of useful educational material and more than likely give us an additional resource to use in our homeschooling studies. The book is divided by subject areas (animals, science & space, technology, etc.) which makes it easy to find the material you need answers for. Our kids were immediately drawn to the book just by the cover. It is brightly colored, bold print and very eye-catching. We all piled up on the couch to read some of the book together. With fun questions like “How is chocolate made?”, “Why isn’t the sky black, purple or green?”, “Why don’t sweaty hands smell as bad as sweaty feet?” etc. this book is sure to entertain and delight your child. I think I was as intrigued by the book as the kids were because some of the questions were even educational to me….or at least a reminder of some facts I had forgot over the years!
The back of the book contains additional fun facts, a glossary of some of the words found in the book and a short list of suggested websites and book for further reading and studies. The only downside of the book is there are a couple of pages that explain answers in a way that we as parents don’t agree with. We are a Christian family and are teaching our children from a Creationist, Biblically based perspective and a few pages of the book go against that teaching. While I did find that slightly disappointing, overall the book was fun to read, educational and informative for the kids and even spurred their curiosity about concepts they might not have considered before reading the book. Time for Kids: The Big Book of How retails nationwide and is available for $17.95.

This sounds like a neat book and not just for kids but for adults, too. I used to always wonder why the sky was blue as a child. This book would’ve been great for me when I was little. The price of the book isn’t bad either.
